they are just joining most every other city in Florida and an increasing # of cities nationwide and worldwide.
Uber has insurance requirements similar to those that cabs and private car services have. UberX and Lyft do not. They just let regular drivers (like you and me) chauffeur people around using their car insurance.

Whats wrong with regular people motoring other people around. Private business, this is stupid imho. I know two folks locally that were making a decent living driving for lyft.
Most consumer-grade insurance policies have a private use restriction in them. So in reality these people probably have no insurance coverage at all, although they won't realize it until/unless the carrier discovers that they were using the vehicle to transport paying passengers, at which point they'll deny the claim.
With that said, the regular taxi service here is just deplorable. There has to be a solution short of banning the service outright.

I've used the service 30-40 times and haven't had a complaint about the driver's skills. They've all seemed very cautious and usually drive the speed limit. I've had a few scary experiences in a taxi though.
They also have a rating system where the rider rates the driver and vice versa.

If private individuals are willing to assume the risk of a lawsuit then let them do so.
What the difference between a fatal accident in a cab or one in a lyft car?
I don't know about everywhere, but Houston and Orlando have the same issues. Sooner or later there will be an accident, robbery or assualt that will put the "stupid decision" complainers on the offensive for the city letting them work without regulation.

I don't understand, does regulation stop cab drivers from getting robbed? Does it stop cab drivers from getting in to accidents?
Its still growing/learning, so it'll come along. I just fear a lot of regulations are gonna be in the form of protecting the current mold & the way business is done. Its hard to sometimes determine who's interest these things have in mind.
BUT, I will say that it does need certain guidelines to use. For instance, a few times when we used Uber DC & had our 2 year old w us, they didn't have any child seats whatsoever in the car, yet the drivers were perfectly happy to transport him if he sat in our laps (we didn't, & I believe this is illegal anyway). I saw recently they launched something called "Uber Family" where you can request a driver w a carseat, but at an extra price of $10 (which many times is more expensive than the actual trip).

Free Enterprise, government will have none of it. Shame on Jack Shad! The apple appears to have fallen far from the tree!
If you want a free enterprise solution to haul around kids, buy a school bus, convert it and use it to transport kids, till then, allow us to have our UberX, Y, Z experience in peace. Its a great service and I dont care what Orlando or Houston do, as I could care less about them, I only care about my experience in Jax, kinda like the restaurant thread, you don't like it, get the heck out!

This has happened already. About 6 months ago iirc.
