Fortunately no-one was killed... Hopefully some good comes from this. It'd be nice to see some money put into that building to fix it up a bit

Thankful no one was seriously injured. I have always admired that old building. I hope you are right and it can be saved. The damage looks pretty severe. It would be a shame if it has to comes down. :(
Wonder if this incident helps or hinders the case for reducing the road to 2 lanes.
That building is done for.
I had a client with a building damaged almost identically to this one, although the cause of the damage to his was just plain ole' negligence of a contractor working on a better jacksonville road widening project, not a big-rig crashing into it. While this is certainly a more dramatic cause, the result is the same. Once an unreinforced brick building is structurally destabilized at a corner like that, it's very difficult and expensive to save it. The city will demolish what's left within 48 hours. Stephendare can speak extensively to this, it was his building in Springfield I'm referring to.
This sucks. The building comes down tomorrow. Just lost a great building that was being renovated and a long time local seafood market.
^Agree. Had gone in on occasion to buy local. A true Mom and Pop and just loved the building.
he had to be cruising through there to shove that rig in there like that. It is a shame to see the building go as it is really a good looking structure.
Demolished overnight.
Shocking overnight demolition: http://www.news4jax.com/news/big-rig-crashes-into-house-injures-5/27115302
Again really sucks. New Town is a considered a food desert and a place like this is where many residents shopped. The owner is 70, so I'm not sure this business will be replaced.
How terrible.
This is like winning the lotto for MCCD.

Really a shame. I loved driving by that building everyday on my way to work. It had so much character to it, I loved taking photographs of it.
And there was no way to only demolish a portion of the building? Just asking...
How were they able to assess the building and arrange for demolition and carry it out that same night? Something not right here.
Watched the video. At 2:24, Scott Johnson says, "Fire and rescue officials say it's unfortunate no one was killed after a Coke truck collides with a city bus..." Unfortunate?? OOPS!! :o

Jumpin...they could not have possibly done that! This City just tears stuff down...period. I'm sure they called out an engineering firm to assess the structural damage....NOT!

Wrong. MCCD was not involved at all. Private contractor took it down.
That was quick. I wonder how long will it take for something new to be built on this block? Also who's responsible for the building owner's loss of business and upper floor rental properties?
I'd imagine Coca-Cola will pay a hefty amount to keep this out of the courts. I'm sure they also have a pretty good insurance plan.

Private contractors are always used by MCCD. Do you know what demo company demolished the structure?

No but I know for a fact that MCCD was not involved in this demolition at all.

So how do you know MCCD was not involved in this demo?
Actually, I doubt that MCCD was not involved with this demolition. It is not unusual when something like this happens for a MCCD inspector to be on the scene pretty quickly. I know that at times in Springfield that the inspector got there while the firemen were still putting the fire out even in the middle of the night. I suspect that the owners were told to demo it themselves NOW or the city would at a greater expense. I am also not sure how the idea of emergency demolition works with permitting and the like unless MCCD is involved somehow. I do know that a private citizen can use the paperwork normally generated by MCCD to do a demo as an emergency. Whether that is even legal or if that was the case here, I can not say for sure. But it is very likely.
Either way, it would be interesting to see who made the determination that the building was in eminent danger of collapse and so had to go immediately like that. Buildings, especially the older ones, can sustain a lot more damage than one would normally think and still stand without much risk of collapse. Of course, I did not see a picture of it after the truck was removed. With all the information, I may actually have agreed with it going NOW.
Still a sad end to a great old building.
From the news reports, it sounded like the Fire Department made the call, based on the danger of it collapsing into the street. Not sure if that is the case, but that's the way the report I swa was presented. (Yeah, I know, local news and accuracy are not always close partners.)
The "Big Plan" is to have everything look like the Southside....these pesky Brick Buildings Have to go....The owners of the sea food shop should HOUND THE CITY!! Hell SUE THE BITCHES!..

You can see the top of the building collapse almost immediately.
I guess Coca Cola will be writing a fat check to Discount Seafood.
Holy s#!@!!!! First off he was hauling some serious tail... second I think he may also end up having jta attached to a law suit as well, he hit that bus hard. But there is absolutely no way in the deepest deaths of hell I'm buying that he was sending off a wasp... he was either testing or fell asleep
The building was evaluated by a professional structural engineer and was determined to be in eminent risk of collapse onto public property. MCC was not involved.
