A long read but quite powerful.

I was thinking more along the lines of trite anecdotal bullshit. But, +1 for your tactfulness ;D
Basically says "I decided to live by my conscience and not by a political dogma"
Most people have a need to belong to a club or team. Religion vs religion, political party vs political party, sports, Apple vs Google, Ford vs Chevy, etc & we're all "fanboys" of something. And the debates mostly go something like "this is my team, they're the best & by god you're gonna hear about it!"
I'm with Joshua from War Games: "The only winning move is not to play."

It sounded just like the far right too.
I guess most people would be better off to strike a balance somewhere right of left and left of right and things just might be better.
The problem with politics is that we let people on the far left and far right dictate things, then it becomes a game of "us vs. them" as mentioned above, and 70% of us just check out and decide its easier to not be involved or listen to it any more.
In reality, if you divide the political landscape into three lanes instead of just two, you'll find that a majority of us are in the middle lane, slightly left or right on a few issues, but for the most part in the middle and able to work together and compromise to get things done. Unfortunately, we've surrendered to the passionate, outspoken minorities on either side who are stuck in the two lane system. They insist that its either us or them and that compromise will somehow end our way of life, and we get tired of listening to it and just leave them to argue and get nothing done.

Except that there is no "far left" in the United States. We have a center-right party (the Democrats) and a far-right party (the Republicans).

I disagree, I think we have a 1 party system.
For example, democrats against war? How's obama doing on that stance? He's involved in as many wars as Bush and wanted to start another one with syria.
What about republicans? Republicans are for less government? They created a whole new cabinet (department of homeland security). They also wants to pass laws on who can marry whom. Doesn't sound like less government to me.
In the end we have a 1 party system that props themselves up by bickering and keeping us occupied by blaming the other party. The power shifts back and forth and nothing changes. In my opinion, they're the same damn party.
