QuotePost Office branch coming to The Landing
A card and gift shop at The Jacksonville Landing will also double as a Post Office branch.
Sundrez is relocating to a new larger space at the Downtown mall that will expand the shop from 1,875 square feet to 3,378 square feet and will also accommodate the U.S. Postal Service.
Shop owner Doug Ganson expects to have the shop and the Post Office open by June 2, and said he will be extending hours of operations.

Will they still charge $2 for a pack of gum?
So, if the landing has a special event, will I have to pay a $10 cover to mail something?
You just do not get it. This is a good thing for downtown and all you people ever do is criticize. But to set the record straight...we do not sell gum for $2.00, our prices are actually lower that a Gate or Kangaroo store. But you would not know that if you did not visit us. So before you pop off, why don't you actually do your research instead of making ignorant statements. And there is one day a year that The Landing charges and I have as much a problem with it as you do. But most importantly we will have a post office in downtown once again. And I was awarded the contract as the only bidder...where were all of you?

Good for you! You're doing a service to everyone downtown. I am in the habit of driving to the main post office, off Beaver. Thanks to you I will have another/better option! What's amazing to me is that you were the only bidder. I would think lots of businesses would want that feather in their cap. Oh well -- it's yours now. I have no doubt you'll make it work well.

I just listened to the video report on this expansion a few minutes ago. It sounds like this larger space is also going to become a full blown convenience store that will sell things like milk and bread as well. While some have questioned the location, its still a good thing for downtown and the Landing.

Will the post office have a separate entrance from the convenience store and gift shop?
Also, for you hamburger loving urbanist, the video mentioned that Fuddruckers is going through the permitting process again right now. There's also a latin restaurant going into the food court.
Too tired from partying in some other city last night - ah the hypocrisy - to watch the vid atm, but do they give an actual opening date for the latin place in the food court, it's been months now?
As for Sundrez relocating to a larger store front, huzzah! The current one is so small, though better than the last two in the Landing. Pease's used book store had done a bit of p.o. functions, but most didn't know it. An option besides Kings Road and the place on the first floor of the Modis building is awesome.
I guess D Ganson told y'all!

Okay Doug, please breathe a bit.

Okay, now let's reread the posts. Never did I ever say that having a Post Office is bad for downtown. If I did, please advise me where I stated that. In addition, never did I bring up the fact that you are expanding the store and providing convenience store goods. Both of these things are gret for downtown, and are very needed. And frankly, if you can make a couple bucks doing it, feel free - that's called business.
Now that we have that out, let me share my actual thoughts, this way you don't have to assume my thoughts. Personally, I think the location of the Post Office sucks. This is not a reflection on you personally, so don't take it that way. If ESPN Zone opened up a restaraunt at River City Marketplace, I'd be pissed as well. I'm not a fan of someone having to walk into the landing, which Toney Sleiman is attempting to turn into an entertainment complex, to send a Legal Contract overnight to New York. I also don't think that our downtown post office should be a contract unit, but's that's their decision.
And as far as the convenience store side, I wish you the best of luck - it is something that downtown needs desperately, and I think you will do well with that. Again, I think the location sucks; I wish it was in a retail space that opens to the street (which would then help to provide a sense of place on some of our vacant streets).
And Doug - a friendly piece of advice. I hear that baseball players sometimes urinate on their hands to help thicken their skin. This may be something you can try.
We need more things like this to make it more convenient and attractive to live downtown and go downtown.
