I have been wondering this too. The lack of information available online unfortunately leads me to believe it's a gone for good thing.
Rents in Avondale are going through the roof. Some galleries may want to take an early look at many of the spaces on Edgewood Avenue in Murray Hill. It's only like a mile or two away but it's an up and coming area and struggling art galleries can reduce their overhead and be a little edgie by coming to Edgewood first and have the other galleries adventurally follow in your wake.

I really hate to see business go under... That is unless they are pulling some shenanigans that warrant them going out of business. Very sad to hear indeed. Out of curiosity how popular was the place?

Why does any gallery need a retail space? Why not just operate from a room inside your historic house? The owners at Avondale Artworks brought in great artists, we have a number of Peter Max paintings and one from there as well. In the end, this store and the Green Man Gourmet both closed. Richard Roberts had a gallery that Jen Jones, the same Jen Jones now in charge of programs down at 220 Riverside, worked in and Richard still lives down the street from us, has great artworks, but even his place was taken over by a Sherwin Williams paint store.
The retail shops in Avondale change based on the needs and wants of the residents. Fewer people buying art from a retail shop, fewer people buying spices and honey and cheese, but the barber shop does well, and we now have a 2nd retail shop for kids clothes and there is still the upscale toy store next to the Brick. So maybe kids stuff is making a comeback there in Avondale. Of course we still have Peterbrooke.
What is happening in Murray Hill with the restaurants and shops, the money is not there to support a gallery, the economics of the area do not support what Avondale Artworks was selling. Not to say that a lower priced gallery may not work there, but go check out any local art show, most of the vendors work out of their homes and travel to show their wares at these shows, much lower cost than having a gallery in the long run.
