QuoteOne Downtown Jacksonville advocate is hoping a food-focused evening market can bring more nighttime foot traffic to the urban core.
Mike Field, whose day job is senior analyst with JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Jacksonville, said the inaugural Jaxsons Night Market will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 17 in the parking lot adjacent to Burrito Gallery at the corner of Main and Adams streets. The event is to be held every third Thursday of the month.
The event will feature about 25 vendors and be "heavily food focused," Field said. Field is a co-founder of Jax Truckies, which promotes the city's food truck scene via social media.

what's a foodie market?
Here's an example of a night market in Philadelphia:

QuoteNight Market Philadelphia is the city's premier street food festival, a roving food event spotlighting Philly's best ethnic and regional restaurants and food trucks. Inspired by Asia's lively outdoor markets, our events celebrate up-and-coming neighborhoods and showcase Philadelphia's diverse food and drinks and vibrant arts and culture scene.
The first Night Market took place in East Passyunk in 2010. Since its debut, The Food Trust has hosted twelve Night Markets, attracting over 200,000 attendees and more than 300 food vendors to neighborhoods across the city, including University City, Northern Liberties, West Oak Lane, Washington Avenue, Mt. Airy, Fairmount, South Street, and Chinatown, and attracting local and national attention to Philadelphia's food scene.

This is going to be sweet. I'd love to see it grow to the point of being able to shut down Adams between Ocean and Main and also take the party to the street.
Dag, everything cool happens when I've got class.
Nice idea. Great job, Mike.
I just realized there's a fairly good band (by Jax touring standards) playing at Freebird that night (Local Natives). Hopefully the 2 events don't cannibalize each other. I bought tickets for that show months ago and know of a few others going as well. I'm sure there are enough hipsters in town to spread the love.
Ohhh and its crap that a band like Local Natives is playing at Freebird and not downtown. Downtown needs a mid sized music venue in the worst way. Anyone ever wants help making it happen, hit me up.

Someone is trying to do just that! By turning the old Snyder Memorial Church Building into a live music venue and recording studio/community hub.
I SERIOUSLY hope it gets funded for bands just like Local Natives!
Snyder would be a terrific location for that, that's for sure.
After walking into Snyder last night, it is definitely an excellent candidate for a music venue in downtown. Spoke with one of the volunteers and she mentioned a $4mil price tag to structurally restore the building.

I've been saying that for 15 years. Something holding 500, 1000, 2000 people would change the music scene in a big way.
How big is Snyder?
Underbelly is not a bad space for that. They just don't book many good acts.
It's definitely awesome, but it's a lot smaller than the kind of venue we're talking about.
I know it has its share of issues, but Florida Theatre is exactly that. just under 2000 capacity.
Was talking to one of the "Creators" of the Snyder project last night. Is currently configured for about 300 seats, but they plan on more - she didn't say how many more, maybe up to 400 - 500?

Sorry for turning this into a music/Snyder discussion earlier. Whoops.
So this is going to be pretty awesome and I'm hearing some good buzz about it. Looking forward to into growing into the next big downtown event!
Looking forward to it. How late does the Skyway run?
Yeah, this is fantastic. I'm used to Taiwanese night markets so this will invariably be a let down for me, but if we've decided to attack the downtown problem by programming popular events every day of the month then we're off to a great start!

Normal hours til 9pm. Unless they've gotten JTA to extend which doesn't even happen for art walk.
It will not be like the night markets out West which are heavily Asian influenced. However, there will be a korean bbq vendor called Heart & Seoul (that also does vegan options) and Hawkers will also be set up at the market (the popular Five Points restaurant).
Other street food vendors include: Pele's Wood Fire, Dig Foods, Super Food (who will soon be opening a downtown location), Smoke It Up BBQ, Soup To Nuts (gourmet soups and grilled cheese sandwiches) and What's The Catch (local seafood).
Other food vendors include The Hyppo (gourmet popsicles), Community Loaves (breads), Liberty Bakery (sweets), Gastrognome (take home Mediterranean goods), Fresh Jax, Consicious Eats, Down To Earth Farms, Alvarez Farms, Black Hog Farms, Meteor Street Produce, Sunrawise (cheeses, including vegan cheeses), Producing edibles (homemade jams and sauces).
You can definately do your grocery shopping for the week tomorrow night... and have a great meal and good beer at the same time.
Skyway hours will not be extended (nor did I meet with JTA to request such an extension).
The only variables will be that (hopefully) the Farrah and Farrah employees will be out of the parking lot by 5pm sharp, as promised.... and the weather cooperates (the market is rain or shine).
Awesome info, Mike. And great work!
That is a pretty enticing list of vendors. Hyppo makes a great product if you haven't tried it. When I worked in St. Augustine a couple years ago, I was seriously considering approaching the owner about operating a popsicle truck between the Jax Beaches and Urban Core, but took a new job before I ever got around to it.
That place could crush it up here in the spring and summertime.
