I've been riding my bike around One Spark again this year.  I must say that I'm really proud of this City and this event for showcasing downtown and the City in this way.  People are out. (People that would not otherwise be in downtown.) There's live music. There's a sense of culture. There's energy. I see this as nothing but a win for Jax.

One Spark 2014, just like One Spark 2013, shows that Jax has what it takes to elevate it's game, albeit for a long weekend.  However, it should create momentum.  I especially love seeing people that I know live in Jax, but would never come downtown or take the Skyway.  You can spot them easily, and they're enjoying themselves, as they should.  I guess what I'm saying is that One Spark is a showcase not just for the out-of-towners, but also for the locals that are realizing that this can be a great urban core with vibrancy.  I really enjoy this, and it's exciting.

The camaraderie and mutual assistance among the Creators is just fantastic.  It's' really fun to see people walking around totally blown away by the energy and ideas that are here.   I keep hearing, "We didn't know there were people and ideas like that in Jacksonville."  Just wonderful to see peoples' low expectations of what this city is like shattered into pieces.

My wife and I were there Wednesday and Thursday night and she commented on how polite and friendly everyone was. It was as if we were all on the same page, on the same mission.

Take note. The same people who hang out in Hemming are still hanging out today. They are the least of downtown's concerns.

Last, I'll be helping my friend Gary Sass by taking guests on free tours of one of the underground tunnels from 2pm to 6pm tomorrow at 121 West Forsyth Street.  Gary operates AdLib Luxury Tours and is trying to raise funds to restore the safe under the old Atlantic Bank Building. When that is complete, the next phase will be to work on restoring some of the closed off sections of other tunnels, in an effort to make them once again accessible. Feel free to stop by and say hi. Here are a few underground pics I took earlier today:

I loved listening to some of the conversations while waiting in line. Longtimers from the Northside declaring that Jax is changing for the better and that it would great if fixed transit were expanded north.

Curious to find out how many visitors One Spark brought to town.

Print the facts, do you have gate receipts or where do you come up with this number. Every press release this event puts out is hyped higher and higher.  You actually going to compare having a super bowl to this arts and craft show?

Listen, I have been a Jaguars Season ticket holder since I graduated college 10 years ago, and I work for the largest Sports Merchandise ecommerce company in the world (making part of my day to day job to be up to date with the sports world, and this is a no brainer - One Spark is a way more important event for Jacksonville. If someone told me I had to pick between this every year and one more super bowl for my lifetime, I'd pick One Spark without a doubt.

This thing definitely can be Jacksonville's SXSW in a few years.

Furthermore, the attendance numbers I've heard have it in the 260,000 people range across the five days. Being downtown on a regular basis, and there for some portion of the event every day, I'd completely buy these numbers.

I really hope so.  But that will always belong to Austin exclusively, right?  My only apprehension would surround the prospect of other cities having their own One Spark (a la Berlin).  While I think the Berlin approach is appealing, stateside expansion might stand to dilute future growth in addition to diminishing the whole Jacksonville's signature event thing.  Maybe I'm just selfish...

On a side note, I did see where FORBES had a piece on Friday specific to One Spark.

I don't disagree with that. I'd like to see Jacksonville retain the marquee event, so the top people from other regions all compete in Jacksonville for the big money, I don't know.

But I'm fine with the event expanding to other countries

This is the most important distinction: The Super Bowl is huge, but it was one time and it will be many years before we're even considered again, while One Spark can be back every year.  Even if the numbers were really inflated, it would still catch up very quickly. But I think anyone who saw it for themselves would agree that those numbers over 5 days sound totally reasonable.

There are a few other festivals that do multiple locations. Art Basel has three (Basel, Switzerland; Miami Beach; and Hong Kong), each planned so as not to compete with the others. ComicCon has a second festival (WonderCon) in San Francisco. Even SXSW was conceived as a local version of the old New Music Seminar in New York and it now has second branch of its own in Las Vegas. I think the key is planning them so each version compliments the others rather than competing with them for attendance.

Superbowl cost 12.9 million dollars to bring to the city.

And it only really brought about 100 thousand people to town.

sure...but there were another 100+ million that watched the game (not to mention all the coverage leading up to the game) worldwide.

that said, One Spark (as an annual event) is much bigger for Jacksonville than any one Super Bowl could ever hope to be.

If your analogy is to be promoted as fact. Then next year charge an entrance fee and get an exact account to compare to $100  for a S.Bowl ticket. If you work for the TU, go back and read the economic impact of the need to bring the S.Bowl to town. You guys keep over hyping this event, be sure to step up when the curtain is pulled back and expose truth in cost, value and return on investment.

Not sure there is a bigger football fan and promoter than I... but I would rather have One Spark every year to an occasional Super Bowl everytime... No contest.

You keep asking us for our sources. Mine are the local media as well as JTA for the skyway numbers...I do trust them to read a turnstile.

Now, since you're the only one that is convinced that the event wasn't that big...what are your sources? Did you not feel it was crowded when you were there? What day(s) were you there?

Also...tickets for the Super Bowl were $500 for general bowl that year, and $600 for club. Not that many people pay face value anyway, but those were the numbers. Out of the 8000 Super Bowl volunteers, I was one of 200 volunteer captains for the event, overseeing a different area every day, from hospitality at the airport to helping the Eagles at their hotel. This is definitely not to toot my own horn, but I did work with them for over two years leading up to the event, so I had an idea of it's impact...and this was better, dollar for dollar, and a much more sustainable event year in and year out.
