Title: Jacksonville Up For SteetBlog's Golden Crater
Post by: Bike Jax on April 08, 2014, 03:20:14 PM
Jacksonville has won it's bracket by defeating Chicago in the Final Four of the StreetsBlog Parking Madness and is locked in for it's shot at the title of Golden Crater.

We are now awaiting the results from Kansas City and the upstart parking crater from Rochester, New York to see who will take the cup.

Follow the results at:

LOL, this is pretty funny. Hopefully we will not win the title. Talk about 'one shining moment' shining as in the sunlight glistening off of the cars in the urban surface lots.

An ignominious honor to be in the "Finals" of this tournament, but to be fair the focus is not in Jax as a whole, but specifically the Southbank with its plethora of surface parking lots sandwiched between multiple lanes of highways. The series does a great job of pointing out the follies of unfettered highway construction, shortsighted planning, underutilization of transit facilities, and the importance of having reliable walkability.

The Southbank beat out some real urban planning doozies, but from the pictures it may have met its match with Rochester, NY's parking lot wasteland - talk about your Kodak moments.

The Southbank seems so different from the DT core. It's like the suburbs with a few tall buildings. Walking around can be downright dangerous.

Historically, the Southbank was not considered downtown. It was a part of the City of South Jacksonville and heavily industrial and maritime related. Most of that scene (which was somewhat walkable and urban) was redeveloped in the 1960s and 1970s into what's there today.

The Southbank is pretty bad but it's hard to make out what Rochester did in the before and after shots.
