Title: Taking credit card payments via Square
Post by: ben says on January 18, 2014, 02:16:42 PM
Figured I'd go here first...

Anyone here use the Square app, whether that be for your local garage sale, small business, entrepreneurial advice, etc?

They take 2.75% off any and all transactions...which seems normal for processing a credit card, no?

Good? Bad? Interested..

I've used it. To me, it's worth it. If you have someone willing to buy something from you, it's best to close the deal as soon as possible.

works. Can have problems if you exceed certain unpublished daily limits. Also: Paypal has a similar product now.

You can get rates lower for mastercard/visa but when you take into account that it is a blended rate for all the cards, its quite possibly one of the best deals out there.

I've used the app with my smartphone and to me, being able to swipe a credit card on my phone upon signing a contract is invaluable.

We, at Chamblin's Uptown, have used "Square" several times when selling at seminars, or at any place outside of the store.  Has worked without a glitch so far.  We connect via an iPad.  I was surprised however when I discovered that we couldn't process or sell any books via "Square" that had reference to "god", the one currently popular with many.  The restriction seems to have something to do with false advertising or something of that nature.  The fine print says we can, however, sell books via Square which have reference to the various "gods" in history.  This stipulation was interesting.

Wow. How would they know you're selling a book like that? Are the purchases described and/or coded? I just figured you entered an amt. and it went into your bank account. El fin.

Well ... I'm not quite sure how they do it ... apparently they assume the user has read the fine print .... which forbids any kind of false advertising ... or ... if my memory serves me ..  forbids the use of the application to disseminate materials harmful to society in general.     :-\

The Concourse d'Elegance of Amelia Island used Square last year for tickets etc. and put something like $300k through the system without a problem.

wow never heard anything about the God book. I did see that they banned sales of guns and ammo.

Anyway, Ill add my name to the list of satisfied square users. And yeah, you can just add any short word or phrase in the sale description.

I have had no problems using Square, it is simple and affordable.  It beats taking checks.

how's the swiper? I read recently that the newer models have a little more resistance because users like to feel that the card is being "read" properly. It was an article about square's lead designer, who was poached from apple. so much thought into a tiny product.

While in Canada last week all establishments and users were using chip cards with a pin. I have also noticed most Marriott brand hotels have changed to dual read units with chip capability. Has anyone heard how Square plans to handle this with there unit/approach. The chip reading units are expensive.

Bet you that the guys at Square all already all over that one.

In this country we are years behind the rest of the world in the security of our credit and debit cards from using the obsolete magnetic stripe systems instead of a chip enabled "smart card".  Even my JEA bus pass has a chip in it instead of a mag stripe.

Chip in pin is used almost everywhere in the world except in the US. Go figure.

Square can hold your money for 30 days, and you can't do much about it. Was told that by a friend who runs a credit carfd processing firm up in Fernandina Beach. If you are a small business, can you afford to have a large chunk of money tied up for 30 days, just because your processor thinks, I repeat, thinks its fraud?

Go local, find someone who you can build trust and realize its not worth a few percent here or there, to be able to get your money quick.

I've had the exact opposite experience in the few weeks I've had the machine...

Money goes thru within 12-24 hours, oftentimes much quicker than comparable credit card companies/machines.

Oftentimes the money goes in same-day.

I think your friend--who runs a credit card processing firm--has a stake in down-talking Square and/or pushing a more tried-and-true method. Go figure.
