Historic? The signage on the marquee was put up recently when they renovated the building at which time the theatre reopened as the 5 points theater. These people bought the theatre and re-named it. Prior to that the sign said "Club 5". I'm sure they made it look like the actual old sign from some photograph they found, but it's a plastic reproduction it's not the old sign. Again seems like if they're having to run around and explain that their re-named business has a different name than what's on the sign, they ought to invest in having it show the correct name.
As to your newfound appreciation of historic preservation, speaking personally, I have no interest in protecting plastic signs made 7 years ago, but maybe I'm failing to grasp the obvious historic significance? But hey, if preserving <10 year old ABS plastic signage is your thing, then by all means don't let me stop you. After all somebody has to go to the Star Trek convention.

Lol ok you got me, now that you mentioned it I still haven't changed the old phone number on my old sign to the new one. Didn't dawn on me until just now, but hey at least I'm honest.
Maybe the liked the sign the way it was? Maybe they liked the 5 Points identity being displayed on their marquee? And like @mtrain pointed out, maybe changing that part of the sign is not in their budget/cost-prohibitive. If I remember correctly they do have signage on the doors and box office that display the Sun-Ray logo and name. And honestly, until I saw the photos I never really noticed that part of the marquee anyway.
I just wanted to point out the correct name so that the writer could update it (thank you, by the way) so when people not familiar with the area stumble across the article and think "Hey, that looks like a cool theater" they Google the right thing.
On the marquee it just says "5 Points", no "Theater". Keeping the sign probably comes from when they were calling it the "Sun-Ray Cinema at 5 Points" to preserve some continuity with the 5 Points Theater.
