December 6th, 2013 -The Battle to Rename Forrest High School Rages On...
Friday November 8th, 2013, the Duval County School Board voted unanimously to move forward with the process of renaming Nathan Bedford Forrest High School. During this process the Board will have a series of meetings with the administrative board of the school, faculty, and the student body to gauge community consensus and to finally move towards an eventual end to a controversy that started in 1959.
Constance Hall, after listening to the thoughts from concerned citizens on either side of the issue, called for a special vote which resulted in the historic decision. What comes next over the month of December is the process which includes meetings, fact finding, and a panel discussion, involving both contrasting viewpoints, on December 11th.
The SCLC, NAACP, Jacksonville Progressive Coalition, Duval Progressives, LULAC, and Occupy Jacksonville will be organizing a street action, on the corner of 103rd Street and Firestone Road, near Forrest High School on December 6th to support the community during the renaming process. The action is headed by Opio Sokoni of the SCLC and will have two support actions in the morning from 7 to 9 am, and the evening from 4 to 6pm, for those interested in taking part but have to work during the day.
Anyone interested in taking part in this statement to support the democratic process, initiated by the school board to build and gauge consensus, is welcome to come and let their voices be heard. To the groups involved, it is important for the community around Forrest High School to understand that they have a voice in this matter as it is their community and their school that they support with their tax dollars.
For directions and if another wants additional information please contact Opio Sokoni by phone at 904-422-6078, or email sclcaction@gmail.com, or Robert Montgomerie at 904-200-6331, email the duvalprogressive@gmail.com.
All are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Come out and lets together take the steps in truly making Jacksonville "The Bold New City of the South."

Why don't we sell the naming rights to the schools to make money like we sell the naming rights to the stadium and the auditorium. "Wal-Mart High" has a nice ring to it, but "Target High" would fit in an upscale neighborhood better.
Of course it would make problems for naming the sports team. "The Wal-Mart High School Minimum Wagers" or the "McDonald's Servers" just doesn't inspire.
