Title: Changes coming to Jacksonville Landing, and public gets a say
Post by: thelakelander on November 21, 2013, 07:34:18 AM
QuoteThe public will have a chance next month to weigh in on the redevelopment of the Jacksonville Landing .
Aundra Wallace, CEO of the Downtown Investment Authority, told the DIA board at its monthly meeting Wednesday that he's been in talks with one of the Landing's owners, Toney Sleiman, since September on a possible public-private partnership to redevelop the Landing.

The city's actions in moving forward on changes to the Landing came as a surprise to the DIA board, a situation about which some expressed concern.

Jacksonville definition of a public private partnership = Public gets to pay for it, private party gets the profits.

There was never a question that Sleiman would seek some public funding....just like the Laura Street Trio.

Plus, the original Landing (and every other festival marketplace around the country) also got some public funding....this isn't just a "Jacksonville thing"

What was that issue they say plagues Jax in general? Everyone working in a tunnel, only thinking about their space and no other?

It appears the lessons haven't been learned yet.

"Hey left hand...Meet the right hand!"

Tunnel and Landing? How so?  I can definitely see that from Sleiman's standpoint, but I also don't think you can effectively enhance the Northbank core by not addressing the Landing.

Wondering that too.  Any info on the amount of money that the landing is seeking?  Are we talking about complete redesign possibilities, like opening it up to Laura and Independent Dr?  Or just adding smaller mixed use items?

If only there was an easy way to flip it inside out and cut a hole in the middle. Problem solved.

I think details have been pretty vague, but I know he's talked about adding a residential component:

And the other article I saw was a major renovation:

I think that's what the public process is supposed to help determine

Think he's referring to the RFP miscommunication.

This might be a step in the right direction...if anything gets done and its not just spinning wheels.

Agreed - the landing does quite well on the weekends, but it's still time for a refresh. Most shopping centers need a remodel to keep things fresh every so many years.

I'd also like to see them better connect w/the river. The current is so strong there I don't think they could put a floating dock or anything out there, but they should be using the river more to their advantage.
