Title: Rant: Social Media Outing the Ignorant
Post by: JayBird on November 13, 2013, 03:04:49 PM
I love social media. I use Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Google+, Vine, and Pinterest everyday. However, today the posts on Facebook courtesy of First Coast News have made me realize just how ignorant the majority of the people living in Jax are when it comes to how their city is run. These people complain about anything just because it has the word 'tax' on it, but yet have no idea where that money is going, being divided, how it is utilized. Now this may be the same across the country, I cannot state on that because I don't live/follow elsewhere and in NYC you really cannot compare because people talk city politics the way those in Florida talk of crime or the weather or tourists. Though I feel social media has its place in all of our lives, to differing degrees of course, and is an important communication tool; I also feel that Jacksonville's biggest problem may not be those running the city but those whom are electing the mayors, councilmen an others. I understand we don't have the time to understand all the intricacies that make up the city government, however this topic about the stadium improvements has been in the news so much that anyone who even remotely pays attention has heard about it and heard that it has no bearing on property taxes and is not takin money from schools, police, fire, etc. Yet there are still the majority of the comments saying that money would be used better elsewhere, which no one disagrees with, but that would be illegal use of funds.

Obviously they no longer, or maybe never have in Florida, teach any civic government classes as part of history anymore. Jacksonville residents need a "Where Your Taxes Go" class or something, because it is quite obvious the majority are clueless. They seem to think that all the money goes into one big bank account and mayor sits on his throne bestowing funds to those that calling to his court looking for funds.

Just amazed at how a community of smart minded people can be so naive and ignorant at times. But I guess that may apply anywhere across this great land. Okay, I'm done.
