Another positive for Downtown.

I hope they have a plan to relocate Jax Vision Care Downtown, the current occupant of that corner suite.  That's my eye clinic, and it would be a shame if they were forced out.  There is enough available space downtown that hopefully they find a great home.

Great news!

I also love that they're adding the canopies.

i think the lighting, signage and canopy plans would be a great addition to the corner. I also wondered what is to happen to the eye clinic?

The new branches are pretty slick - feels sort of like an Apple store.  No walk up counters / more kiosk driven & all traditional "tellers" are "personal bankers".  The ATMs are nice; exact denominations & even a Happy Birthday message on the receipt.

Thanks for the nice comments Brainstormer!  Jax Vision Care-Liane Downtown is currently in the process of reaching an agreement to move our office next door from where we are now.  We look forward to being neighbors with Chase Bank, and to continue providing eye care to our patients downtown.

I know everyone's always looking for the big projects to turn around DT and I'd love to see some too, but small projects like this that improve the street level environment and aesthetics of DT, can really make a big difference when added up together over time.

It would be nice to see the ground floor facades of most of the existing spaces in downtown revamped to better engage the sidewalks they line.  That alone, would present a very different look, feel and vibe than the atmosphere that exists today.  I thought we were going that way with the Laura Street facade thing but I guess that fizzled out? Other than Chamblin's sidewalk seating and mural, I haven't seen anything else.

So is this no longer on track?  The Daily Record's update shows a shift toward the Barnet Bank Building - does that tie back to the retail hints that have been dropped as of late too?

This story posted seems so confusing. A couple of weeks ago Atkins indicated that the ground floor and mezzanine was already leased and in this story he seems to indicate still working on it and Chase is a possibility.

A little more today:

QuoteChase had filed plans last fall with the Downtown Development Review Board for a branch at the Life of the South Building at 100 W. Bay St. The building was sold in December and Chase's intentions for that site are unclear.

well the article never stated specifically that the bottom floor would be leased to anyone. I do think that alternative entrances will likely need to be installed, because banks are really sketchy about having people in the building after hours. I only know this because I work out of the BOA building. So maybe Chase will have the main lobby and that second revolving door off to the right will be for the upper floors and elevator access. I think it may be good for the building. It definitely will make it one of the most secure. The question I have is where would the parking be? are they planning to integrate it into the proposed lot for the trio?

I don't think any specific design plans have been revealed by the Atkins group, but a parking structure was originally included as part of the Laura Trio rehab announcements a year ago.

I knew about that one, but did they ever say if it was for the trio and the barnett?

If you ask most of the others on the site who don't actually live or work downtown, "there's plenty of parking and we don't need anymore garages."

I would imagine this will expedite the trio garage, though. I believe I remember hearing this would be the Barnett's main parking structure. Worst case scenario they could use the ones between Bay and Forsyth and Forsyth and Adams temporarily.

good information. Thank you. I just remember seeing a lot of parking lots for sale for insane amounts of money throughout downtown. I am just more inclined to believe it needs to be more than a way to make money off of parking. I mean some I understand, but residents deserve to not have to pay to park. So do business owners.

A parking garage over by the Laura Street Trio was always part of the proposals for the Trio and the Barnett. In fact, my understanding is that this is the primary reason they're always bundled together in sales - the Barnett is in much better shape, but the only good place for a parking facility is over by the Trio.

I'm one of those who's very skeptical that we need any more parking downtown, but the reality is these buildings aren't going to get rehabilitated without a garage. It's a net gain.

Yeah, like Tacachale stated, it was to serve those buildings. The lots for sale are landlords squatting on downtown land hoping to make a buck. The inflated prices unfortunately slow down revitalization.

I am almost certain that this recent boom is only going to make those prices go up more.

Well prices shouldn't go up purely on speculation otherwise nothing will get done. These landlords play a game of chicken with the community taking the hit in the long run. Fortunately there are other avenues to obtaining property/land in DT Jax besides buying an empty lot.

I agree. I am working on trying to find the other avenues. It just is a tough find... everyone has seemed pretty hush hush when I inquire about things.
