This obviously is not getting anywhere near the attention this kind of announcement deserves.  This has moved me emotionally a great deal today.

Hogans Creek and the Springfield parks have been one of the most neglected urban amenities in our city's history.  Having a coordinated, citizen-driven organization with the power to raise and be awarded money is how the likes of say Houston's Buffalo Bayou (very similar to Hogans) were restored.

Christine,
Can you describe the vision behind all of this?

Some context from the aforementioned Buffalo Bayou:

TU's Mike Clark did a nice little video on Hogans a year ago:

Here's the finalist list of cities that were in competition for this funding:

QuoteNPS Announces New Potential Groundwork Communities for Further Evaluation

NPS-RTCA has selected communities from across the country for further evaluation for Groundwork USA Pilot Funding and Technical Assistance. As a next step, NPS and Groundwork USA representatives will be making site visits to meet with the local Groundwork Steering Committees to learn more about their ideas for developing Groundwork in their communities and to work with them to further evaluate this opportunity for their communities.

GWUSA is excited to announce the following communities, selected for further evaluation, discussion and a site visit:

•   Atlanta GA (led by Riverwalk Atlanta)
•   Chattanooga TN
•   Detroit MI
•   Indianapolis IN
•   Jacksonville FL
•   Lewiston-Auburn ME
•   Los Angeles CA (led by LA Conservation Corps)
•   New Bedford – Fall River MA

This is the best news I will read all week, at least!
From the old Shipyards, along Maxwell house, by the Casket Factory and Old St.Luke`s, near the Karpeles, and the active and passive portions of linear greenspace dotting and straddling this pointlessly neglected waterway, clear up to the new veterans hospital near UFHealth (shands) tunnel below 8th St., this is very VERRY EXCITING!!
Finally, some great news!

This can only help the old Cadillac building and stalled parkview inn pavilion, Berkman 2, old Dr.Horace Drew castle-esque "mansion", and every area near the creek, I hope.

I also hope years of feasibility studies fly by!

*editted for typos & clarity.

Where is Deer Creek? ???

It's about where MLK Jr. Parkway crosses (or would cross) 7th St, and from there it flows east under Talleyrand to the river.

In the spirit of RICO which is a regional benefit. And after calling in 10/30/13 and participating on First Coast Connect 89.9 fm with Melissa Ross and asking a question of the new Executive Director of the Civic Council Jeannie Miller and if anyone happened to be tuned in I believe didn't answer my question it was time to Make a Scene again on Hogans Creek a tributary that leads to our St. Johns River our American Heritage River a FEDERAL Initiative.

My BOLD (Building Our Local Divide) Urban Core tactical paddle started at an active piece of legislation 2013-384 which after the 6/25/13 Public Hearing had the applicants say that they could support an amendment that would provide 24/7 Public Access to Hogans Creek a tributary that leads to our St. Johns River our American Heritage River a FEDERAL Initiative.

Governor Scott, Commissioners of FIND, five years later and I still don't have a sponsor for a Pocket Park/Pocket Pier that I can take back to the Commissioners of FIND. And MJ'ers and you know who you are. Not picking on anyone but we have all given up asking you know who about you know what.

The weather conditions were perfect to provide a spark at this potential waterfront Public Access street node that would add to an organic cluster of infill activity. It was a high outgoing tide and the garbage was everywhere. I did a very light cleanup because I forgot my Vivian Harrell Bluebag. That just bummed me out. Did bring my fishing gear.

The real purpose for making a scene and being all in was to embrace the announcement and the community support for a positive benefit that is Hogans Creek in a formative period that will tell the world to VISIT JACKSONVILLE.
