Robert Montgomerie: Government Shutdown

Midnight September 30th, 2013, the Federal Government shut down amid the banter of a President unable to adequately sell the American people, and the opposition party, on a plan known the Affordable Healthcare Act. In response to several attempts to thwart a law inspired by their own party's "brain trust" in the 90's, the GOP opted to ask for a stunning set of demands, many of them actually favored by the President, in return for an increase to the debt ceiling.

Good job Robert.  Here is another article that speaks to this issue sharing some of the same thoughts.

That was a good article. I use open office and for some reason it doesn't like me so I end up sending everything up in RTF without links or anything.

QuoteDespite the ridiculous claims that it is either the GOP or the Democratic Party's fault alone, it isn't; they're both equally at fault despite what the shills and partisans would have us all believe. But aside from that, one can't help but wonder if even the ACA was worth a partial government shutdown, even if only for two-weeks, or if the two-party monopolization of our federal government is going to be what ultimately ruins us as a nation.

The only thing they will have accomplished is having Pelosi, Reid, and Obama vigorously defend the ACA...as is...  8)

I can't disagree with what you say bridge troll. Do you believe there are concessions that can be made by ranking Democrats?

Of course.  I am in no position to know what they are but... they hold all the power.  They have the executive... they have the senate and while a minority in the house... there are more than a few republicans to form a coalition.  IMO... the only reason we are being "held hostage" by 40 "renegades" is because the majority described above does not want to "cave".

So are you saying the Tea Party really has that much power? I'm inclined to think that with a President not at the bargaining table, the only power they may have is what he is giving them.

What I am saying is the ONLY power the TP has is this action.  The majority has many different avenues of negotiation and bargaining chips at their disposal.  Early in this "crisis" the majority had no intention of even having discussions... preferring instead to let the TP, Boehner, republicans twist in the wind.  No problem... it is after all politics.  But even that action makes the majority at least partially responsible for where we are now.

Political Miscalculations all around (if we default) is what I think...

But they've had all year to come to a deal and, most of that time, they were in agreement on everything except the ACA. Personally I believe there was a little too much political theater coming from both sides.

Sounds like the theater is over... with crisis averted at the last moment... who knew?

Does sound like it.  I will feel much better when they have actually voted to approve the current deal. ;)
