Great article! Liked it very much, used to practice football on the Skinner Dairy Farms fields. I remember that bus ride all so well.
Went to school w/ one of the Skinners (well multiple, actually). Remember many field trips to the dairy farms. Great stuff.
Same here.
Very interesting walk through history. One minor correction: University Boulevard Mall is now owned by RAM Realty out of Palm Beach Gardens, not Sleiman Enterprises.
Thanks kbhanson3. I'll make that correction.
Outside of those apartments there are whole neighborhoods with houses built in the 50s & 60s. Most are kind of run down but so many are perfect examples of mid-century modern design. One day that'll probably be the next big neighborhood revitalization. Many cities around the country are reinvigorating those 50s & 60s neighborhoods. Jax of course is fifteen years behind that trend along with all other trends.
Good work. Minor correction - DuPont Station existed before 1988. Pantry Pride was the anchor in the 70's.
Interesting. The date listed by the property appraiser appears to be off by a decade then. Was the center remodeled in the late 1980s?
I miss the old Skinner Dairy drive thru's.
Lakelander, Roger904 is correct. Pantry Pride was the original anchor there, in a freestanding building. The center was remodeled in the mid-to-late 80s. I think the Pantry Pride parcel might have been consolidated with an adjacent parcel as part of the center's redesign, if I recall correctlly. When my parents lived adjacent to it in the mid-80s, it was still a defunct Pantry Pride, before the redevelopment had occurred.
My parents lived in a number of homes and apartments in that area from 1970 until the late 90s. First in the San Jose Manor subdivision just south, then ultimately in 3 different apartment complexes in that former Skinner farmland. One was adjacent to that old Pantry Pride site. It was also right around the corner from picture #30; I recognize that intersection at the corner of Morton and Chester - it hasn't changed much at all since the early 80s except for the removal of the last cows. :)
Thanks, YellowBluffRoad. That explains the mix up on the overall dates from the property appraiser's site. I guess, the 1980s date was when the Pantry Pride parcel was consolidated with an adjacent parcel as a part of the center's redesign.
Yikes. Bolles used to have football practice on those fields (maybe they still do). Trip down memory lane. Feeling old.
