Title: Plans for an Eastside Grocer
Post by: I-10east on July 08, 2013, 03:06:01 PM
The site is on Eighth & Phoenix. The drawings have Save-A-Lot pictured; regardless of what grocer it is, it's DESPERATELY needed. This is the freaking Eastside we're talking about, LOL *Que the obligatory is it urban enough talk*

LOL, I-10.  Are you saying Save-A-Lot can't be "urban"?

This project has been on the drawing board for a while. I remember Gaffney bragging about it a few years back at a meeting in Springfield.  At the time, Sav-A-Lot and McDonald's were mentioned. Apparently, the only thing stopping it from moving forward is city hall.

Sometimes I wonder if sarcasm is a foreign language.

As for the proposed site, I'm not a big fan of what Save-A-Lot did to the Food Lion across the street from Andrew Jackson but you have to start somewhere.

^^^That Save-A-Lot on Main looks okay to me. What was it that you didn't like?

I remember this too, during the Weed and Seed presentation.  There is a shopping center that is supposed to go there.  A family with money from Jax owns the acreage?  Is building?  I remember some information came out and we were asked to add input.  One thing I remember being strong about is adding bike racks to lock bikes.  There were none.  And it didn't seem too walk friendly.  Like folks were only going to drive there.  I don't see that being the case.  There will be walkers, and not the kind from "Walking Dead" either.  They didn't have sidewalks or something strange like that.  I also remember commenting that if they wanted peeps from across the tracks to come over they had to offer organic food and other items folks shop for, or no one would come over.

Let me guess Stephen, you wanted the entire plaza on Main to be reconfigured into a mini-Manhattan, right? Because that would have been money well spent, right?

Is this where the Pat Lockett-Felder monument is?

Save-A-Lot put a wall through the store and is only using around half of Food Lion's old foot print. You wouldn't notice it from the outside because they kept the old entrance the same. The layout of the store is also very cramped and the shelves are never kept in good order.

^^^I believe that the SAL on Normandy (old Food Lion) was did in a similar fashion. Typically SALs are mid-sized, definitely not the size of an average-sized Food Lion. Now Wal-Mart Neighborhood Supermarkets are a perfect footprint for a Food Lion.

After Premier Foods closed its doors, it seems Springfield hasn't had a real grocery store in some time.  What ever happened to the much hyped Julie’s Urban Grocery?
