I found this poem in a box of my grandfathers things. He passed away recently. It looks like he wrote this back in the 80s. What do you guys think? I don't know much about poetry.
Anybody want a peanut?
I have enough for two.
So sit right down or cop a squat
And please just take a few
I don't know where I'm going to.
I'm not sure where I've been.
But one thing I hold on to are
the peanuts in this tin
I got these peanuts from a store
I can't remember where
It seemed to me they looked real good
I wonder if you care.
I used to live in Germany
I used to live in Spain
My wife moved to seattle, cause
She always liked the rain
I tried to move I really did
I end up staying still
My wife lives in seattle now
And I'm in Jacksonville.
We came here in the summer. Or
in fall of 56.
We liked the beaches and the weath'r
The town was full of hicks
As time went by it got too hot
Maybe we grew colder
We talked about some place up north
To move to when we're older
But Sally left and I stayed here
I'm not at all sure why
There's something about jaxsonville
I Ne'er can say goodbye
Maybe I'm just sentimental
Or Maybe it's the sky
Perhaps the sunset on the riv'r
But I just can't comply
And the peanuts, well how are they?
They arent too stale or bit'r.?
It's all I have and I'm alone
I should have just went with'r.
This is an absolutely gorgeous poem, it tells such a complete story. I get a great sense of who the speaker is in the poem, it is a very personal piece- yet at the same time I can feel myself relating to so much of it. Thank you for the sharing of such a wonderful find.
Sincerely,
SEB
