Title: Couple upset over museum membership policy; say it excludes same-sex families
Post by: RiversideLoki on June 11, 2013, 11:31:08 AM
This past weekend, news broke that The Hands On Children's Museum located on Beach Blvd. was allegedly discriminating against same sex couples in regards to membership. FCN ran the story. (http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=316478) and the story has since (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/10/hands-on-childrens-museum-lesbian-moms_n_3417240.html?ir=Gay+Voices) gone national.] (https://www.google.com/news?ncl=dgQ930wIOfEiIGMO6bnli1WAjvz3M&q=hands+on+children%27s+museum&lr=English&hl=en)

Things are getting strange on the associated facebook pages of both camps. Support The Hands On Children's Museum (https://www.facebook.com/SupportTheHandsOnChildrensMuseumSupportTheFamily) is now posting on Boycott The Hands On Childrens Museum (https://www.facebook.com/BoycottTheHandsOnChildrensMuseumJacksonville)'s page and deleting any comments supporters of the boycott leave on their page.

Apparently, HOCM changed their pricing policy yesterday (click here to see before/after price change) (http://i.imgur.com/BdbIzgi.jpg) to something even more strange, as it's now MORE expensive and discriminates against any family besides single parents? I dunno.. I feel like they're on the verge of going full on Amy's Baking Company in the PR department.

Thoughts?

My only thought is that I'm completely surprised that it took this long to make it to MJ.

I was watching the thing unfold when there were only a couple hundred on the boycott page and then realized the next morning that it had gone completely viral.

Could it be that they smell competition in the air????

I suspect museum is a rather loose use of the word.

The problem is with the state not recognizing same sex marriages - that's where the change needs to occur. Until then, they're just abiding by the law.

It had nothing to do with the state recognizing marriages or not...  These were 'family' memberships....

Maybe it was the terms, 'Mom' & 'Dad' that was throwing everyone off....   ::)

Wow. I was assuming this was just a bad management action and the museum hasn't actually intended the insult. If it was intended, they should be willing to deal with people who don't like their practices.

I'm not a lawyer, but I really doubt the states definition of family includes same sex marriages.

Indeed it doesn't. Of course even if it did, this is still a private business, which has the freedom to serve who it chooses. The downside, as they seem to be finding out, is the public also has the right to express the opinion it chooses. Sort of a natural check and balance there.
