Title: Memorial Day violence at the Beaches
Post by: Jaxson on May 30, 2013, 11:45:49 PM
I was disappointed to read of the recent gang-related violence at Jacksonville Beach on Memorial Day weekend.  Instead of well-deserved R and R with their families and friends, some people went home with traumatizing memories of a melee that marred their otherwise sunny holiday.
What bothers me, in addition to this senseless violence, is how there is a segment of the Beaches community that lumps all 'townies' together under an ugly stereotype.  Yes, there are ignorant people who cross the Intracoastal Waterway with ill intentions, but they do not justify the kind of negative comments that I have seen on the Times-Union message boards and in the 'take back our beaches' meme that is popping up.
Our community is much more evolved than regressing to beliefs that we have to keep the Beaches somehow 'pure.'  I am sure that there are other 'townies' who share my opinion.
Any thoughts?
