Title: BeerCity USA voting IS NOW OPEN! Get Online and Vote
Post by: Gonzo on May 06, 2013, 11:44:19 AM
We pulled off the nomination to get Jacksonville on the ballot for BeerCity USA. Now it is our turn to show the nation that we are proud of our beer scene, breweries, and establishments. From the fevered last hour voting we achieved in order to get on the ballot, it is apparent that Jacksonville is a passionate beer city. We just have to prove it by voting for our fair city as BeerCity USA.

Earlier, I had reported that voting would not take place until next week. That report turned out to be wrong because voting is open now and remain open until 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 10. The same rules apply as before, only one vote allowed per IP address. That means that if you access the Internet through a network only one person on that network is likely to be able to vote.

Charlie Papazian, the originator of the poll, had this to say today on his blog, “BeerCity USA poll highlights the spirit of support local, small town and big city Americans generate on behalf of their communities. BeerCity USA is not a measure of beer quality, number of breweries, volume of beer enjoyed nor any kind of “best-of-show” measurement.

“It’s an indicator of the coherent nature of beer communities. It celebrates and recognizes the importance of responsible enjoyment and social interaction. One could take a look at the numbers from many perspectives: economic impacts, breweries per capita, regulatory impact, beer consumption, comparative share of craft beer from craft brewers, blue versus red, winning baseball teams, stadium beer offerings, jobs created, big versus small, etc.”
The ballot includes cities that received 400 or more votes in the 2012 BeerCity USA poll or received 400 or more “nominating votes” in the recent (now closed) nomination poll.

Heres how the BeerCity USA 2013 ballot appears. Vote Here.  http://poll.fm/47pfz (http://poll.fm/47pfz).

Done!  :)  I noticed something to watch for when you vote.  After checking the Jacksonville circle make sure when you scroll down to vote that your has not scrolled with you and ended up marking a different city.

Per IP address but as others talked about over the weekend some voted several times from different IP addresses? To me that is cheating!

Who cares

IILU,  You have me tickled with your concern about this beer contest so let me quiet your fears about the fairness in the voting just a tad.  This voting system was set up by the folks holding the contest to allow for one vote per IP address.  They "know" that some folks will vote from more than one IP and they also know that family members who share an IP can only vote once (so some will be unable to vote).  The creators of the contest also know that the practice of some voting from more than one IP will take place across the board in all the cities on the ballot.  So it really averages out.  There is no ethical threat here in using what this system allows.  lol

I love that the local Brewing scene has blossomed here recently. I raised my glass to Bold City with a Duke's that was on tap at our Spring Festival this past Sunday.

I don't have a dog in the race, but what do you think is 'unethical' about rigging a vote in a rigged campaign designed to promote beer drinking?

Do you think that the promoters have a stake in actually determining which city is 'BeerCity'?
Then the only point of the poll is to cheat?

Is it just as fair to gauge beer enthusiast enthusiasm?

And what about all the people who share a wifi network but their vote doesnt get counted because the rules are 'rigged' to prevent the IP address of the network from reporting more than one vote?

Are the promoters being 'unethical' by having that rule?
I asked my Lawyer and he said No, Yes, Maybe?

Seriously, you asked your lawyer? This is supposed to be a fun way to promote pride in your city's beer scene. Let's not make it an ethical delemna. Just have fun.

I voted! Go Jacksonville.

Friendly clarification: An issue becomes an ethical issue when there are basic needs and legitimate expectations at stake. I don't see any basic needs being at stake here, but I do observe some legitimate expectations at stake: The rules reflect a one vote per IP address parameter. Why? Probably to discourage multiple votes per person. There could be other reasons, but that seems the most likely reason. SO, IF those are the expectations, based on upholding equal access, fairness, something like that, then a legitimate expectation IS at stake, and this IS an ethical issue. The most reasonable course of action then, per those expectations, is voting once per person, or at least once per IP address. Rationalizing won't change what is at stake, it will only make some people feel better about their decision. Wanna learn more? Sign up for the Reasoning Labs Meetup group I just started last week!

Even if we don't win, hope we have enough votes to put us in the "Pre-Qualified" category for next year.

This is it, the final day to vote for Jacksovnille as BeerCity USA. With all that we have going right for us in the beer scene -- a vibrant "Beer District" along King Street, a strong showing of local breweries, a rabid base of beer lovers, and a growing awareness of craft beer -- we have a chance.
