Located outside of Jacksonville until the city's consolidation with Duval County, this Southside neighborhood is home to many residences dating back to the 19th century.

Ennis, Thank you again for the history. Picture 25. Can that teeny tiny boat ramp be part of this new Public, Private, Partnership which is the Fishweir Creek project and then get the official Mayor Brown kayak logo? I'd say yes. That's how simple it can and should be. Vote on the FIND Boat Ramp Master Plan. May try and kayak today in Public restricted zones today that some of us would call Downtown.
Awesome article, Ennis. I told you Empire Point and Marabanong were worth a look!!!
Awesome piece about one of our most interesting neighborhoods, Ennis. I think you have some of your captions switched. This is the building that was originally part of a bowling alley:

And this one is the Cummings guest house:

Yes. Unless the episcopal staff has it wrong, they say the two buildings are used in the way that tacachale describes.
What Tacachale has posted is consistent with the descriptions of those buildings in Jacksonville's Architectural Heritage.
Fantastic history and photos as usual.
Thanks Tacachale, I'll go back and fix them.
I always thought that area was St Nicholas. Off topic where is the best concentrated area of midcentury modern in Jacksonville?

Ha, no one seems to agree on where St. Nicholas is. A lot of people do consider this part of St. Nicholas, but I think it's more common these days to consider St. Nick to be more to the west.

I don't know about which is the best concentrated area... but a stroll around Empire Point, Atlantic Beach, Ortega (west of Roosevelt Blvd) and some areas near Arlington (particularly closer to the river) will net you some good examples around town.
BTW, Episcopal sucks :P
Midcentury modern? Arlington has a great collection of examples.
I love this neighborhood... Except for the total lack of sidewalks, and the tendency of some residents to drive like they're trying out for the Daytona 500.
Field, don't be jealous. Intuition will ban you from their premises.
Bagley, Richard and Hogans were also the ones to rip out or plow under the significant number of Timucuan Indian Mounds throughout the Arlington River basin. I don't think any of them survived.
Back then, they didn't have a clue there was any historical value, they just needed their land cleared.
There was a lot of history there prior to the Spanish.
