Hi!
Could I get some bar and/or club recommendations for around Jacksonville, please?
I like a lot of different types of places, so you can make lots of kinds of recommendations! I don't have any interest in cheeseball Top 40 club places, but I do like:
Dive bars
Any number of hipster joints
Old school hip hop (no stupid, new commercial garbage, please!)
Metal
Dubstep
Country
I really like places with kick-ass dance floors, but I know that may take some time to snuffle out, just because so many times, you end up somewhere with a bunch of pop-culture sheep with no manners.
I like seriously stiff drinks and fancy mixology equally well, depending on my mood, but I never drink beer. I have no problem with a dress code, but a lot of times during the early part of the week will probably stay casual.
So, what's good, Jacksonville?! I'm excited to be here! Thanks in advance!! :)
Hi RachelLikesFun,
You might have some fun reading through this thread on the best 'dive bars' in Jax:

I recently went to a "Veterans of Foreign Wars" facility on the corner of Feltch and St. Augustine. They open up a "bar" in the evenings. If you're looking for a place where a dozen drunk older guys will walk up to you and introduce themselves to you. This is the place to go. Everyone was very nice and very drunk (on a Wednesday). The drinks are cheap ($3.00) and strong.
It was fun for me. It was not fun for my lady friend. She will never go back. Her words were something like, loosely interpreted, "I'm okay with meeting two new people at a time." 8)
I would probably suggest the bars in Riverside's King St. district if you're into Hipster Bars. Downtown also has some great places. I'd definitely recommend Dos Gatos.
Knowing what area of town you live will help some.
I personally like Cinderella's
Thank you! Keep 'em coming, please!
I think I went to Riverside/King St last night -- a fast shot of Jamie at 616 (turned out I'm not the target market there, but the bartender was cheerful and quick and a shot rarely starts the night off badly, right?), but then I hit Birdies, Black Sheep and O'Brothers?
I had a very nice time, despite missing last call at Black Sheep. I'll probably go back soon and a few ppl recommended a place called The Garage . . .
I'm open to different neighborhoods. I'm only here for 6 weeks tops for a work assignment and have a truck, so a little adventuring out to whatever is cool is really appealing to me.
Thank you again, can't wait to hear more. :)

Since Riverside's King St is taking on a beach vibe on the weekends I recommend the Shim Sham room in Jax beach. It had an artbarish/pearl hint to it earlier in the evening.
They played a wide variety of music on a Saturday night. Modest mouse to hiphop, whatever got the crowd moving. It has a quieter back bar area for those of us who are claustrophobic when sober, a long u-shaped bar downstairs for gazing across the room & a crowded dance floor upstairs.
For country, definitely mavericks at the landing. Go between 8-10, no cover, happy hour, and free line dance lessons! Check their website though, if they're having a concert the dance floor gets really packed. On a related note, if you like country music, they have some great concerts that come by. http://www.mavericksatthelanding.com/

Ah, you're talking about 5 Points. You hit all the necessaries besides Wall Street if you want a classic dive bar. A bit further into Riverside is the King Street district where you have to try hard not to have a good time. Plenty of good bars out there.
For the best mixed drinks in town go to Dos Gatos downtown. While you're there there are a number of good bars within walking distance of each other. The best place in town for live music is Underbelly (also downtown).
If you don't like beer you're missing out on the best part of the Jax bar scene. It's worth checking out the breweries even if you don't drink there.

Sounds like you'd like Shanty Town in Springfield, on W.6th Street near Main.
Too bad 57 Heaven burned down. It was an "old-school sock hop" kind of place.

It's still open. Not sure how since it looked like half the roof burnt off, but they have a huge sign that says so.
Ooh, this is great! Thank you so much again, everyone.
I'd love to learn more about where people like and why! (How many bars can I hit in 6 weeks? Ha ha, this should be fun.)
Blue Fish in Avondale has a most excellent bar!
Yeah Rachel come find me working at Shantytown or Burro Bar...first pints on me!
