My daughter just informed me that the tiny little BBQ shack that started on Fairbanks in Winter Park grew up to have 3 Orlando area locations. '4 Rivers Smokehouse,' is absolutely some of the best BBQ this side of 'The Commissary,' in Memphis, or 'Ken's Steak and BBQ' in Amber, Oklahoma. Okay the place in Orlando is pretty amazing.
Now a check of the website for '4 Rivers Smokehouse,' shows they are Coming Soon to Jacksonville! The address is 9220 Baymeadows Road. From google earth it looks like they are moving into a building which sits WAY back from the road rather hidden by Hardees. I think the property does have a decent parking lot and a really tall sign which could make it easier to find them.
Anybody know what this place was? Anyway the old place is going to be a destination, we should sell them our downtown.
The old property behind Hardees used to be Roadhouse Grill or something like that if I remember correctly.
Yes. The old Roadhouse Grill conversion into 4 Rivers is well underway now.
Eagerly anticipating - I believe that the owner has JAX ties. There's a life size bronze longhorn already in place at the street.

As an alumnus of Oklahoma State, I kind of have a problem with longhorns! ;D
A bit off-topic, but do people have a go-to BBQ joint in Jax? My favorite so far has been Mojo 4, but perhaps I'm missing a reliable spot?

Toby's Barbecue off US-1/Kings Rd. Incredible. Love their daily specials too.
Monroes on the Westside
And of course, Mojo.
Thanks for the suggestions. Never heard of any of these places -- THANK YOU!

Monroes also has a new location on Beach (near St Johns Bluff, across from the Post Office). Definately recommended.
Also have a very soft spot for Driftwood BBQ's (food truck) ribs.
The Pig off Normandy is another favorite of mine.
Cottons and Jenkins seemed to have raised their prices a bit too high in the last few years, IMO.
Checkers BBQ has a good cracker family-style dinner on Fri/Sat nights that I would also recommend.
Treemendous on Herlong is great but my favorite is Smokin' D's down in St. Augustine. It's one of the few local spots I've found that does a white BBQ sauce and their BBQ baked beans are just stupid delicious... different varieties of beans that all retain their texture and are flavored with red bell peppers and smoky pork bits.

Awesome tip! Thanks!
"In addition to Jacksonville, 4 Rivers plans to expand to Gainesville in 2013 as well. The Jacksonville restaurant will be a homecoming of sorts for chef/owner John Rivers, a former pharmaceutical executive who claims Jacksonville as his hometown."
Gary Mills did a brief back in October 2012.

Willard's BBQ junction on Roosevelt Blvd does some good BBQ too. I find their drive-thru too convenient!
Gators BBQ
A little outside of Jax is the Shack by the Track. Well worth the drive.
Jacksonville is loaded with great BBQ places, with the mustard based sauces you cant beat it! and again we take no credit for something that is unique and done well here.
TC's for Ribs and chicken
Plenty of traffic pass that location daily. So much that getting there might be interesting at lunch. However it is close to I-95 and Baymeadows. Maybe a block east of I-95 so ingress and egress isn't too bad. I think too there is a back entrance to the parking lot that will allow you to get back onto Baymeadows at the light so you can go east or west no matter the Baymeadows traffic.
Construction seems to have been going on remodeling around six months. They should be getting ready soon.

You are so right fsujax, this guy IS FROM JACKSONVILLE! But then come to think of it, so is 1/2 of the entire damn skyline of Miami... Financed from JACKSONVILLE. Henry M. Flagler, Henry B. Plant, Sir Edward J. Reed, William Boyd Barnett, Alfred I. du Pont... and the list just keeps going. Meanwhile back to BBQ, this is how we roll in Jacksonville!
I haven't been yet, but people have been raving about this place. They will go out of their way to mention it. We won't even be talking about food and they'll just tell me I have to go to 4 Rivers.
Word is that John Rivers also plans to open at least 2 more locations in Jax, and prefers non-typical locations. His restaurants become destinations that people will travel to and he knows it. Springfield, Murray Hill, I'm lookin' at you.
Well worth the 15+ minute wait in line.
Great place.
Yes, this place is pretty good. If you don't want to wait, get take out. It's still worth it.
have been 5+ times since they have opened. All the food has been excellent, except the mac and cheese which was overly salty. Service has been outstanding and I think the prices are reasonable.
Crazy how polarizing the mac and cheese is.
People either really, really love it, or really, really dislike it.
I'm a sucker for the corn and the baked beans.
The bakery is pretty fantastic too (Red Velvet Twinkie, FTW).
I thought the same about the corn... It is amazing what can be donewith something as simple as corn.

Second location announced for Orange Park. Right next to my office! Going in the old Ryan's Steakhouse/Quincy's/Denver's Steakhouse/Something with wolf in the name bar. Nothing seems to stay in this place, but 4 Rivers is different.
So...where will the next one be?

Hook 'em Horns! :)
Meat's pretty good, sides are ok. I still give Mojo the edge.
