Wagner is 200 years old in May of this year, and his work and music are still amongst the great achievements (and controversies) of the past century. This weekend, the JSO will be devoting an entire evening to his work and it already promises to be one of the better presentations of an already exquisite season. Join us for more after the jump!

I have to admit enjoying the Ride of the Valkyries (and would it be even remotely the same if sung by a skinny woman wearing two little seashells for a bra?), but it does make me wince that it is being performed so close to Holocaust Remembrance Day and Passover.
Stephen, Thanks for this excellent piece. The music is important, serious, and definately worth hearing. Hearing it live at Jacoby Symphony Hall is an incredible experience. Anyone who honestly believes that there is nothing going on in downtown Jacksonville at night should make the trip and check it out. Starts at 8 pm.
I'd rather hear some Mahler myself. Though looking ahead in the schedule, hope to be back in town for the Britten centennial.
Don't forget before the nazis, Wagner already had the dubious distinction of winding up as the musical score for Birth of a Nation, lol. For somebody who was purportedly no more racist than the next guy, it's pretty funny how many times his stuff coincidentally wound up being used as racist propaganda. He died too early compared to his work being co-opted to have had any say in it, I don't actually believe he had anything to do with it. Just kind of funny, even dead, the guy can't catch a break.
