Title: INVITATION FOR VOLUNTEERS AT ANNIE LYTLE
Post by: PATSY/AUTUMN on March 20, 2013, 10:40:38 AM
Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the clean up process at school #4?
The building receives no maintenance from the owners.  It is an endangered historical treasure!  Efforts are being made to clean the building and grounds.
Work is in progress on Saturdays around 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.  As of now, we have 2+ volunteers on that day and time.
We continue to fight against vandalism and for the restoration.
Anyone who wished to get involved in helping us out can reply here or contact Timkin who leads the efforts.
We need responses from those who want to walk the walk, not talk the talk.  ACTIONS speak louder than words.

What do we need to bring if we want to come help? I live in an apartment, so I have no tools or gloves of any kind.

whoo hoo, Brooklyn South!!!  A lot of determination is the key element.
I do recommend gloves.  brooms are a bit help.  I think Timkin could give you more suggestion.  He has been working on this for YEARS.
Here is a reminder of a couple of less thought of things:  water, or something of your own preference (excluding alcoholic beverages, of course.  lol) There are NO utilities...no water, no lights, and NO facilities.  We use flashlights.
we have contractor bags.
This morning when I first posted there was a huge omission on my part:
While Autumn and I are new to this, we have need to give credit to all who have been there much longer than us.  I mention Timkin, but the ones that we have met are; Ralph W, Dog Walker, Carol, Trish.
A little comment about Ralph W....Ralph and I met when  I was exploring the grounds one weekday.  He was performing a one-man yard detail.  We had a long chat and his enthusiasm is what won me over.  Took me a few weeks to get up the gumption to get off my rear and get to work.  Thank you, Ralph!  You sold me and I am eternally grateful. :)

Can't the city use imminent domain against the owner or the building? It needs and deserves an owner that's willing to fix it up and re-purpose it.

you should direct that question to Timkin.  My answer would be that the City wants no part of it either.  They have  already sold it off to get out from under the expenses.
You might wish to view SAVE SCHOOL NUMBER FOUR / ANNIE LYTLE on FaceBook.

The City WOULD USE Imminent  Domain to take the building ONLY if a prospect comes forward with a means to pay for the building, a means and plan in place to begin  immediate work on its restoration and carry it to completion.

As we speak , I know of one large player investment group looking at the School .  This is all preliminary and nothing official yet, but their goal is to try to make the numbers work to  keep the School in place, add on to the back of it , similar to the 2006-2008  Retirement facility proposal, except this time , the goal is to convert the entire plaza to a medical Complex.  Given the School proximity to Hospitals within blocks, this seems like a reasonable fit.

With that said,  again.  NOTHING IS CARVED IN STONE!  I will let everyone know as soon as I know.

We have reason to continue to have hope and continue forward.  Everyone who has ever volunteered, for an hour , a day, several trips.  week., or years,  Each of these individuals have helped us begin to turn a really negative situation around. I truly hope by Summer's end , we have accomplished all of the cleanup interior and exterior we can do before renovation is undertaken .  I love Annie.  I truly want to see her restored and I want for the day to come where we can channel our energies to another structure, like the Beloved Horace Drew Castle House.   There is a building running out of time at a rapid pace.

On that note, See Patsy or Timkin  for hold harmless agreements!!   Many thanks!!

Many thanks , as well to METROJACKSONVILLE for donating to our cause , allowing us to use this stellar on line media resource to get our message out!!

Thank you all :)

Hello, my name is Hunter, I am a freshly recruited volunteer.Tim Got with my partner and I which recently started a lawn care business and inquired about our services for the property. Being born in Jacksonville I have known about this school for quite some time and would love to be a part of the effort to help save it. We were able to get down there today and do a good mow and weedeat. We our planning our next efforts around getting all the piles of debris curbside including the palm stumps piled up on the front side of the building. Its amazing to see all the work you guys have already done, the property has changed drastically from some of the past pictures I saw. I look forward to meeting all the volunteers involved. Take care.

Hunter, and his friend Jeremy are our two most recent volunteer recruits.

If you go by the PS4 property, you will notice a meticulously ,fresh-cut lawn ... the School's grounds and the adjacent lot at the corner of College/ Roselle.

Sincere thanks to Jeremy and Hunter of Arlington Lawn and Garden Care , who have selflessly donated their time and has done a fantastic first cut for the season of the School's lawn, working around remaining debris piles.

If you need lawn / garden care,  Jeremy and Hunter are the guys to call.

Many thanks again, guys !!!

This weekend at PS#4..

We removed the pile in the School's front yard of a portion of the remaining failed auditorium roof as well as more debris in an area near one of the Stairwells,  trash in the front yard.   There were 3 of us and it was pouring rain ,but we pressed on anyway.

It is heartening to review in pictures, the profound progress we have made in  10 months.

The amazing volunteers for the last six years and those presently, have continued to make this happen.

Heartfelt thanks, to my amazing volunteer team :) !  !  !

We continue to make progress even if today was a total wash-out.  So much work is being accomplished by such a small group.  Recently had a couple of alumni drop by and share their memories.  Given the chance again to speak with former students, we plan to video them.  Thanks to Metro Jacksonville for allowing us to post here.

Hello my name is Tiffany and I am an agm for a local hotel and we have a care committee and our goal is to help out the community. We have a meeting tomorrow and I am going to try and get everyone on board to come and help. I drive past this school everyday and feel so bad that the school has gotten in this bad of a state. So with that said when do you conduct these clean ups? I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you for your time.

Hello Tiffany... Thank you for your interest.. we meet at the School between 9-10 am on Saturdays.   Bring some gloves, and trashbags... the two most useful things at this point.   Please advise Patsy or myself via PM of the number in your party so that  I can provide drinks for everyone. Certainly appreciate your interest.

We have made great progress on the building, but are far from finished.  We always welcome new volunteers !! :)
