Well you're in luck.

The Yates parking garage will have two of it's towers covered in a mural as part of Art In Public Place's mural program.

Expect to hear about some more in the future... maybe even one in Riverside :)

Is this being paid for by the Laura Street facade improvement grant?  Really good use of the money if so.

I think so as well.  Shaun is an amazing guy and hes been working on his art for a while.  Once he was just a kid with a spray can.....
"Once he was just a kid with a spray can" Stephen not everybody who once was a tagger is a True Artist as this Shaun Thurston truly seems to be.  ;)

So happy to see that you did not capitalize the word "god" Stephen.  There is hope.  Thanks.

you used the word 'hope', ron.  It implies faith. Which means there is some for you.  Youre welcome.

belief in something better that may yet happen, without the belief (or faith), there is no hope.

Kind of obvious, really.

Huh?

I hope I win the lottery this week. That doesn't mean I believe I'll win it. Hope and faith can be, and most often are, mutually exclusive words...

Glad to see more of Shaun's work around town. One of the true art gems we have here. Also I'm glad Chamblins is so welcoming to the mural and supporting local art.

dumb.  obviously you believe in it enough to spend the money on the lottery ticket, so clearly you do believe in the possibility.  Semantics can be very boring, ben says.

Oh G/god, another thread is off religioning.

"There is always hope" - Aragorn II, son of Arathorn, 16th Chieftain of the Dúnedain, King Elessar Telcontar of Gondor

Anywho, Ron, how is something like this maintained? Does it get a clear-coat to protect it, or must it be touched-up regularly? I've always wondered that with murals. Seems that maintenance on art would be, well, exhausting and difficult. And it would really add some interesting attribution concerns (unless the original artist is the one returning to maintain it, which would be even more exhausting).

I talked briefly with Thurston this afternoon.  He says that the medium is acrylic, and that there is a $50/five gallon bucket clear acrylic which can be sprayed over the finished work.  However, he says that the murals he did using the same medium do not seem to be deteriorating .... at least as a consequence of not having the clear coating placed upon them.  I believe that the mural is expected to last at least six to eight years.  They might last longer however.

I guess I threw the first pebble about religioning.... with my thankyou to Stephen for not capitalizing his use of the word "god".  This non-capitalizing indicates a slight drift away from the conventional religious camp.  That's why I said there is hope for the population, in that others might follow.  Stephen is simply too smart of a guy to engage blindly the evangelical movement, who do of course always capitalize the big word.  But.... I agree....although its sorta fun..... let's not start a big argument again about gods and the "stuff", at least on this thread.  Peace be amongst us.

Thanks for both. So would the idea be to get another mural done in 8 years time or have it re-touched?

Does that mean that you aren't going to build the apartments above the bookstore? I really hope they're part of the plan. We can't let anymore chances to build residental units Downtown slip by.

We need the Ed Ball building painted again!

The Cultural Council put in a grant application for this. I'm not sure what the status is, but I know the plan was to begin soliciting ideas from local artists by June.

Actually the apartments will be in the next building, above the Gus' Shoe location.  There will be three apartments on each of the two upper floors, ranging is size from the 400's to the 900's in square footage.
