Las Vegas monorail carries 55 million passengers

LAS VEGAS â€" The Las Vegas monorail transported its 55 millionth rider this month. The 3.9-mile monorail, operated by the Las Vegas Monorail Company, has seven separate stops between MGM Grand and Sahara hotels. It takes 15 minutes for the monorail to make the trip.
The Las Vegas Monorail project was built by Bombardier Transportation and opened in 2004. The technology for the monorail vehicles came directly from the well-tested monorail systems running in Walt Disney World. It's a private NFP. They are still working the financing on their extension to McCarron Airport.
They don't have the deep pockets like FECI has for AAF.
I don't have access to their ticket mix, but I would surmise it gets it most use for multi-day pass for gamblers.
Also some hotel/casino packages include a pass to ride.
It is great for people who need to get the convention center. I use it whenver I go to town for conventions.
However, when on vacation, its just cheaper and easier to use the Deuce or pool up on cabs and not have to venture to to the far back of the casinos to access the monorail.
If they finally take the monorail to the airport, then I can see that stretch making money. Otherwise, this thing is going to continue to hemorage money unless either the convention center dramatically increases its activities or the North side of the strip gets built out twith nice hotels and attractions or both.

From May through September the Vegas temperature's average between 100 and 117 degrees! So yeah, $5 dollars is a bargain. LOL.
This thing has ran backward financially from the start. Everyone who is still dreaming of the 'Skyway' to our beaches, airport or mandarin should note, even with 55 million tickets sold, it borders on financial collapse. Light-rail, streetcar or BRT make a hell of a lot more sense for anything beyond the core. I think the Skyway could be given it's own urban boundary - something like Atlantic on the south, Stockton and Fairfax streets on the west, 12th street/'S' Line on the north, and the St. Johns River on the east. Anything within that circle could be considered for Skyway expansion, beyond that the Skyway would not be considered. This would certainly make certain people less then enthusiastic about mass transit a bit more 'friendly.'

A 3 or 4 day pass easily pays for itself... especially if you are travelling back and forth the length of the strip... especially when it is 105... but it is a dry heat... 8)
