Title: Salvaged Columns Anyone?
Post by: JaxUnicorn on February 23, 2013, 09:13:40 AM
I am looking for 4 round, tapered matching wood front porch columns to use in my restoration.  Anyone know where there might be some available?  I've already checked Burkhalters.  If so, please contact me at JaxUnicorn@gmail.com or reply here.

Thanks!

What is the dimension of the finished height needed?
and will they be supporting a dropped beam? if so, how wide is the beam?

Also, on what will your beauties be resting, and what is below?
I hope I can put you in touch with a friend who has seven, nineteen foot tall, complete with capitals.
He MIGHT split them up leaving him with 3, I do not know.

IF 19' tall is a doable fit, let me  know and I will happily chase him down.
Love a good looking reno!

Best to you!

Hi Spence and thanks for the reply!

The columns don't need to be quite that tall.  I'm looking at 78" max (could be shorter - may build a "box" for them to sit on to match the bottom porch).  The columns will support the upper porch roof that has a 2x6 beam that supports the roof rafters.  They will be sitting on new porch flooring supported by 2x8 joists.

Hopefully that answers your questions even though it sounds like your friend's columns are way too big (I'd have to cut them down....)

You might try calling the Victorian salvage place in Deland to see what they have.

If you can't find salvage there are load-rated, fiberglass reproduction columns that can be ordered in almost any style, height and diameter.  They aren't terribly expensive either.
