What a Transit Station Could Look Like

If you haven't used a real rail based transit system, that runs at least ten trains an hour all day, on time, then you probably don't know what it's like. It is like electricity. It's just there, and it works. At ten trains an hour, there is a train every six minutes. You don't have to look at a schedule, you just show up and, within an average of three minutes, you get on the train.

I'm a fan of the Paris Metro - it has a number of beautiful stations as well. An example would be Cité:

In all of the subways and rail systems I've been on I think the Hollywood and Vine station of the Los Angeles Red Line is probably the most fantastic. Yeah, it's all tinsel and plywood, paint and lights, but hey, isn't that the point? MEET HOLLYWOOD now and then.

Now roll back the clock 58 years and only a couple of blocks away...

I have never understood what in the hell were people thinking when this happened?

Quote"Of course not. You lack vision, but I see a place where people get on and off the freeway. On and off, off and on all day, all night. Soon, where Hollywood once stood will be a string of gas stations, inexpensive motels, restaurants that serve rapidly prepared food. Tire salons, automobile dealerships and wonderful, wonderful billboards reaching as far as the eye can see. My God, it'll be beautiful."
Apologies to Judge Doom

The monument is adjacent to 299 South Toluca Street, in Westlake. It is bounded by 2nd Street and the Beverly Blvd viaduct to the north, Lucas Avenue to the west, Emerald Street to the south, and Toluca Street to the east.

It's been surrounded by high density housing and you can barely seen the tunnel entrance through the trees. The substation is barely there as well.

Google Maps Street View has it if you go to 299 S. Toluca and spin the cam around. The tunnel goes under Contreras High School now.

I found it.  It's pretty cool to see the entrance and substation still there behind that huge apartment complex.  Too bad they put a hotel's foundation through the middle of it in downtown.

Though the last cars to use the tunnel were the newer PCC's it was the unique "Hollywood Cars" that are memorialized on the new mural in the sealed tunnel. (Hollywood Cars were a distinct class of interurban/streetcar).

HOLLYWOOD CAR,

I've ridden on the Hollywood Cars, but my first train trip and longest PE journey was on the Long Beach Line from somewhere in downtown LA to Long Beach on a Pacific Electric "Blimp" (a massive class of car) shown in this photo.

Yes it's been cleaned up and sealed off. I believe one of the major banks downtown, what was I think Crocker Bank has also blown right through the old tunnels. The city of LA is paying BILLIONS to undo this mistake.

BTW, that photo of the PCC car exiting the tunnel was the last train into Toluca Yard which is where the apartments are today. You can see the tops of many Pacific Electric to the lower extreme left of the photo where the car is approaching the platform.

You would be hard pressed to find a railroad, or great machine, or conveyance, more beloved then the old Pacific Electric.

Nuff Said!  Angelios absolutely cling to the memory of the Pacific Electric Railroad, to wit: the new LA Light Rail Line

Well, that explains the Beverly Blvd./1st Ave bridge.

I thought it was to relieve car traffic, but it was there to let the PE underneath.
