well I'm glad those issues have come to the top....means we should be able to have some really meaningful discussion
^For sure. It's not surprising but it's nice to see that these are the major concerns of such a broad sample of the metro population. Time to get it done.
Out of curiosity, is the Mayor and City Council reps going to be at these group meetings?
^^good question. I am sure the Mayor will show with his camera person.
The Mayor will be there. He is a member of the JAX 2025 Steering Committee.
The Mayor is the honorary chair of Jax2025...he will be speaking tomorrow morning...and he's actually been pretty engaged in the process to date.
any councilpersons?
Yeah, it just seems like these things would be a waste of time if the 'decision makers' aren't involved.
I'm sure there will be some there tomorrow. They are expecting over 2,000 to attend.
heh, I hope Redman is there then and I hope people take them to task over their bad decisions
From the mayor's office via email:

The headline of the TU article says "transportation" not "transit". I'm curious to know if the survey responders were expressing frustration with our road system or our public transit system. The article didn't specify either.
People like to complain about the roads, however, I feel that we have one of the best (probably overbuilt) road networks of any city I've visited.
Our transit system on the other hand is non-functional for all except those who have no other options.
^ The question asked on the survey was to transportation as a whole....but I can assure you that many respondents drilled down further in comments....I'm sure transit will come to light as a major issue in the coming meetings
5 hours out. Anyone going? There was a red dot green dot exercise that was done at the 1/16/13 DIA/CRA Plan Committee meeting. Encourage everyone to participate.
I'm heading to the Prime Osborn now.
Right behind you.
A new Authority

How was it today, and how was the turn out?
Here's an artice on the FTU about today's event: http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2013-01-19/story/jax2025-brainstormers-take-frank-look-city

How was it today, and how was the turn out?
The turnout was less than expected. A lot less based on the facility setup. Reported turnout was around 600, but the room was setup for between 2,000-3,000.
The format was simple, introductions/acknowledgements, an oversight-level presentation of survey data, and small group activity structured around two questions (what do you like best about Jacksonville, and what would you like to see changed about Jacksonville). The event wrapped up with each person describing how they would like Jacksonville to be in 6-words.
I attended with my daughter (a Junior in high school). She had interesting thoughts on the event (although she's in Youth Leadership Jax and on the board of the Jacksonville Youth Council this was the first major civic engagement she's had on a large scale). I'm reflecting on the event, letting my thoughts incubate.

also, it is important to keep in mind that this is a phased process....there are 3 more meetings, and the next two will focus on action steps!

Ok - I was given the number 600 by someone who would know. It's conceivable that closer to 800 were there. I suspect we'll find out for sure when the sign-ins are documented. I was told today that the turnout was significantly less than hoped for/expected.
The discussion was good. Many of the big issues that are familiar to everyone were raised. Some of the discussion was spirited. I learned new things from people at my table. Hopefully many new introductions were made.
At the meeting there was a conspicuous effort to create a "feel good" environment. They had clowns greeting participants at the entry during the pre-function time before the event, and the first song played at the conclusion of the program while people were leaving was "Shiny Happy People". Each place at all tables had logo'ed gift bags with sponsor information, goodies such as plastic sunglasses, an overview of the process/upcoming events, and the like.
Upon reflection, after the event, I was left wanting more. I was hoping that more data/detailed results of the survey that more than 14,000 people completed would've been provided to everyone rather than landfill-bound gift bags and throw-away sunglasses. Hopefully there will be more substance and data in the future meetings.
Ultimately JAX2025 relies on two things: 1.) greater public participation in the process in crafting a true citizen-authored vision for the city; and 2.) the mayor and city leaders that are responsible for actually crafting policy and investment need to "co-own" this process with the citizens and agree that the outcomes of this initiative will guide the city's decisions and become the roadmap for the future.
I hope that more people attend/participate in future meetings.
The goal was for at least 2,000 to attend this morning. From what I understand, the survey's data will be made available on JAX 2025's website for all to have access to and utilize for a variety of things in the future.
I enjoyed the interaction with various Jaxsons at my table. Many of the typical issues mentioned in previous visioning events/studies came up. My attitude towards this visioning process has been a "participate, wait, and see" point-of-view. Ultimately, the true success or failure will come down our city's desire and will to actually play a part in implementing the vision's action points.
I'm kind of annoyed; was this open to the public? Where was it advertised? I had no idea and would have loved to have walked from my apartment to the event. I was emailed the survey; but no email telling me about the event... or at least not one yesterday as a reminder.
Also, I'm a member of NAIOP and ULI, two trade groups that would most certainly be interested in the event, and I heard nothing from them? No email from Downtown Vision either.

I responded to the survey. I didn't read any TU articles, but assumed that the administrator of the survey would have contacted me directly about the event today. I get the DVI emails and will look back through them advertising this mornings' event.

Many/most of the attendees were familiar. People active in civic & downtown issues. It was mostly an older demographic, less kids/youth, fewer young 20-somethings & young families, and not as diverse as I'd expected/hoped.
IF there were 600-800 attendees, that means that less than 1/100th of 1% of Jacksonville's population was represented. I was at the Town Center area to run an errand after the work session. When you look at all of those people I suspect that if they were asked, a vast majority of the population isn't aware of JAX2025 or is apathetic towards many of these types of community issues & initiatives.
Yes....because sadly gun shows are more interesting
I filled out the survey, and was notified by Facebook, where I "friended" the Jax2025 site. I was going to go today, but woke up with some sort of crud, and did not want to be around people.
Reality is that not everyone is interested in visioning, and frankly, that is a good thing. Most people would rather be out living their lives.
When I worked on a much smaller version of this in San Marco, we struggled to get what I thought was representative turnout of the neighborhood. I realized that it wasn't because they don't care, they just have other things to do that are more important to them.
Yesterday morning, I was at a 5k race with my 15-year old son honoring the memory of Dale Regan. It was a gorgeous and spirit-filled day on the banks of the river. We were doing the things that I put on the survey that I wanted more of. Community activity. Outdoor exercise. Access to the river.
QuoteI realized that it wasn't because they don't care, they just have other things to do that are more important to them.
^Great point.
I wasn't at the event, but I did take the survey and encouraged others to too. Sorry, but consider me pessimistic. If this site has convinced me of anything, it's that we are the action not these studies, that I'm sure will be "drilled" into, ignored, and then parsed to death.
I'm sure that the transportation comments will be "drilled into" and I'm sure the results will leave us wanting.

I show up to meetings. I'm at a the events, and council meetings. Like Doug said, sometimes you have other things. Like being out of town, as I was.
And action doesn't always come from being at the meeting. It comes from a group of people willing to do what they know works. How many studies and meetings has Jacksonville had that are then ignored or twisted. I'm sure all those meetings and grand shows were well attended.
At this point I'll wait to hear the change "they" tell me will be the next step. While waiting, I'll continue working to make sure I can effect the small changes I have the ability to change, and I know help the community.
why not do both? the next meeting is in 2 weeks and it will only be 2 hours long.

From what I've heard, it sounds like Saturday was just a live forum thread. People kicked around some ideas and made suggestions, but nothing actionable was created. I had to miss Saturday's meeting and I will have to miss the next one (family commitment and community service, fyi), but I support the cause and once an executable plan or program has been developed, I will be 110% behind it. We're not bad people for missing the meeting, and you're not a good one for going. You can't guilt people into helping you. We all want to help, and we all will when we're able, but life can get busy sometimes.
How about less visioning, talking, and planning and more implementation

sorry....not trying to guilt anyone...or say anyone is better than anyone else....just want folks to understand how this whole thing was put together....keep in mind that one of the co-founbders of Metro Jacksonville, Ennis Davis, is on the steering committee....which shows the power MJ has and how much JCCI respects it.
as for the process itself, the first meeting was merely an introduction....remember that much of our citizenry has never been part of a visioning process, so baby steps are needed.
the second meeting will be developing recommendations...and meetings 3 & 4 are about setting implementation steps.
Please come support as you can!

The 1/19/13 JCCI 2025 kick off rally had me singing Send in the Clowns. Maybe because the circus is in town and the Trunks and Food truck event at the arena had the same stimulating effect along with the clowns.
I arrived just prior to the 9am kick off and there were a lot of the same familiar faces. Ben Warner was greeting everyone upon arrival. (Like the tie) Saw councilman Bishop, Love, new school board member Jason Fischer, Ennis with his lovely wife. Mike Miller JTA, Skip Cramer former ED w/ JCCI, Brad Thoburn, Terry Lorrince, Councilwoman Boyer, and councilman Brown and most of these people were by the coffee and pastry table before we even got started. And a lot more familiar faces too.
There is no doubt that there was plenty of room as you walk past the empty tables. The red table cloths going forward just had me thinking that red dots will be good. Our table was nice that it was made up of new faces and I recognized only one from a previous JCCI study that we had done together.
At our table is a couple debating if they want to move Downtown. A fellow from Boston. And others that had interesting backgrounds and experiences. There were a lot of questions and suggestions that were being discussed and thrown up to be put on the list.
For me personally I'm looking and thinking of past studies. Didn't we just have "Recession, Recovery, and Beyond"? Where are we with that? Another one "Our Money, Our City, Financing Jacksonville's Future" And we are in worse debt when we had the study. I'm writing this after the city council voted to withdraw the legislation on Metro Park. This thought just popped into my head was Don or Scott there for this event?
I liked our table. Nobody ever raised there hand for the mike to share with the group although some had some good suggestions. One guy said that a company instead of coming to Jacksonville relocated to St. Johns County because of the schools. And now it seems that we will be waiving residency requirements for our own JSO 2013-55. Speaking of new legislation how about 2013-51 so will the new DOWNTOWN artificial reefs that would make DOWNTOWN a DESTINATION And not a pass through now be moved to the beach. What a joke. We are so LOST.
Were any of the Independent Authorities there? JAA, JPA, JEA. What I thought was interesting was that JTA employees were there and suggested a tax increase. That was an interesting table. Just like the first live blogging DIA meeting going forward and how packed that was.

I hope the council and mayor of Jacksonville look at how San Antonio's elected leaders and policy-makers took ownership of the city's priorities and used this effort as their roadmap. That's what's really necessary - or to elect different leaders who will.
Round two less than 1 hour out. Anyone going?
I'm getting ready to walk out the door and head that way now.
The 2/2/13 Jax 2025 Draft Vision Statement had me standing in the middle of the room with a facilitator and I'm saying to myself "eanie, meanie, minie, Mo, Which table do I want to go."
Everyone had a choice of 1 of 10 categories. Ultimately everyone participated in two of the 10 categories. Some of the choices were Arts and Entertainment, Transportation, Governance, Economy, Education, Neighborhoods/Downtown, Clean and Green the Environment is where I started.
We had a good represented table of people that put together a bold statement that should have everyone sitting up in their seats after you read it. Forget about getting busted with that 16 oz. fountain drink. The two words that stick out for me in our two sentence statement that I'm still thinking about is "Environmental Ethics".
I'm sorry but didn't we have a Code of Ethics in our city charter in 1968 and was removed 4 years later in 1972 and it was just recently because of the Charter Revision Commission recommendation that the Code Of Ethics that was removed now be brought back. Palms Fish Camp! There has to be something environmental with that one. I digress.
So on to table two and the next categories for me was Neighborhoods and Downtown. I know Scott Wilson was there for this one because he was at our table. As was a representative with the Mayors office. The discussion was primarily about Downtown, Parking, Homeless, One fellow talked about the River and I'm saying to myself "keep going man". made sense to everyone that was there. Some frustration on his part for sure. As for me I used the word Welcome. I don't feel Welcomed Downtown especially when it relates to the river and I shared with the group a recent opinion rendered by the general councils office to support that conclusion. Scott, please jump in here and share your thoughts about our table.
Props to Mayor Brown. He was there the whole time and took the time to see everyone and is engaged in the process. Ben Warner is doing a nice job in continuing to gather the information. Ben, you are going to have to auction off that tie at the end of this thing. Looking forward to the next one.

Yes....because sadly gun shows are more interesting
You mean the gun show that could easily be held at the arena, fair grounds, Hyatt or a dozen other places around town? Perhaps your onto something TUFSU1, "A free box of .22 bullets for every attendee."
Ock...the gun show I was referring to was held at the fairgrounds....although it was interesting yesterday to see the wide deifference in attendees at Jax2035 from those of the gun show held next door.
As for how the evnt went yesterday, I think was overall pretty good. Probably 400-500 people showed up...within a week or so, we should have broad vision statements for the top 10 issues (see above post from Noone)....and for those who want to get down to details, the next meeting (Tuesday March 19th @6-8pm) will brainstorm steps to achieveing the visions.
My bad TUFSU1, now all we have to do is convince them to move the rest of the 'shows' out of the Jacksonville Terminal and into some alternative location.

How did it go?
Yesterday, the mission was to create vision statements for the top 10 topics that came out of the survey and kick off meeting. Everyone had the opportunity to select two categories to participate in. I chose Transportation and Downtown/Urban Neighborhoods. At my transportation table, we breezed through this assignment. We struggled quite a bit to focus on the task at hand at my downtown table. There was too much discussion on what downtown needed to attract suburbanites. I heard tear down historic buildings for Apple stores, comparisons of DT with Dubai, and the need for something unique like the St. Louis Arch or Seattle Space Needle. I realized my knowledge on downtown and development was a little advanced for my table, so I suggested some things to help keep us on track.
Towards the end, Mayor Brown stopped by our table and asked our opinion on attracting grocery stores and restaurants to older neighborhoods like Durkeeville that were not historic like Riverside/Avondale or Springfield. I mentioned, they were all the same and that Durkeeville, in particular, has a ton of potential with its historic housing stock, busy streets, and Stanton. I threw a redevelopment response that was probably somewhat different from the expected answer. I suggested that you could encourage more grand scale redevelopment by possibly implementing a program where residents within a certain walkable radius of the magnet school could have their children automatically enrolled. It's clear that people are willing to move to certain areas of this region to get their kids into the best schools. The draw of Stanton could easily attract residential growth and redevelopment in a neighborhood like Durkeeville and that buzz alone would help stimulate market rate commercial development to the community.
Outside of that, it was great getting to meet more people in the community and working together for a common goal. I'm looking forward to the next meeting and seeing how general vision statements will begin to result in implementation strategies.

First we have to get rid of the out of control corruption.
The positive benefit is that the FBI is in Jacksonville and that translates into economic development.
Is the next JCCI 2025 meeting still on in 3 days?
yes....and this is the meeting where action planning takes place....this is where the vision statements turn into tasks (they should, we will, etc.)...so if you want to be a part of making Jacksonville a great city, plan on being at the Prime Osborn this Saturday from 9-11am
Here's more...from an email I just received
Jacksonville's future depends on you...on all of us. Thousands of us have joined together to speak up, take the survey, attend the events, and craft a vision. This is a community-led and community-owned vision, and now we need YOUR HELP to make it real!
The next JAX2025 Visioning Event is just 4 days away. This session will focus Visioneers on discussing action strategies - how we can all make this vision a reality.

Palms Fish Camp! There has to be something environmental with that one. I digress.
So on to table two and the next categories for me was Neighborhoods and Downtown. I know Scott Wilson was there for this one because he was at our table.
Less then 24 hours out for our 2025 Vision and you have to and will need to pick one statement that is important to you. What if there is more than one? What the heck is Environmental Ethics? Are you kidding! We can't get Ethics right. Visit Jacksonville- Our child molesters get pensions to with Board approval and community support.
Ethics- Carla Miller will the retaining of text messages be part of the new Ethics legislation? It needs to be. You have one of the biggest FBI investigations in the state that had a Lt. governor resign. And Access to our Great River the St. johns. Does Environmental Ethics extend to the FBI and a RICO violation as it relates to Public Access and economic opportunity to our St. Johns River our American Heritage River a FEDERAL Initiative? I'm very concerned.
So who is embracing their favorite statement?
Environmental Ethics?- Vince Seibold?
A new Authority
Embrace It
Or
It will Embrace Us
Just hours away. Anyone going? Ben looking forward to sharing a statement that will provide a positive Vision that will contribute in making Downtown a Destination and not a pass through. Hope your wearing the tie!
I'll be there.

How was it today, and how was the turn out?
The turnout was less than expected. A lot less based on the facility setup. Reported turnout was around 600, but the room was setup for between 2,000-3,000.
the room was set for 2100...and close to 800 attended
also, it is important to keep in mind that this is a phased process....there are 3 more meetings, and the next two will focus on action steps!
For me personally I'm looking and thinking of past studies. Didn't we just have "Recession, Recovery, and Beyond"? Where are we with that? Another one "Our Money, Our City, Financing Jacksonville's Future" And we are in worse debt when we had the study. This thought just popped into my head was Don or Scott there for this event?
Were any of the Independent Authorities there? JAA, JPA, JEA. What I thought was interesting was that JTA employees were there and suggested a tax increase. That was an interesting table. Just like the first live blogging DIA meeting going forward and how packed that was.
Downtown Jacksonville

for Business.
Steve, Like you, I hope there is more substance and action.
For the benefit of urbaknight on another thread.
JAX2025 Implementation Orientation 5 days out. Anyone going? 11:30-1pm
WJCT studios, 100 Festival Park Ave.
I hope to be there, but work demands will determine
Is there a bike rack near by for me to lock up my bike, or do I have to go all the way over to the stadium?
Anyone going?
I plan on attending the great meeting of the LOST 10 am 4Th floor city hall 6/26/13. The secret FIND list will be unveiled.
Environmental Ethics-Vince Seibold.
What are we going to be measuring again?
Looking forward to the Implimentation.
I have made it to all the meetings but #1, and if I can get a sitter, I'm hoping to make tomorrow's meeting.
I am interested, if anyone knows, will they finally give some direction as to what "lay people" can do to be a part of this process? Most of the people attending seem to be from one organization or another- and I am not sure what people like me should be doing-other than what we put on the "I will" cards.

agreed, I hope that we get some direction this time. The last meeting at the turnover club in Everbank Field. LOL seemed like a preliminary press conference. We have ideas and here are the people in charge, that was it.
I think all we can really do is share our ideas with those who are well connected and also willing to listen. For example, I talked to a petition worker to save the libraries. I advised that the Friends of the Library should run someone in that organization for City Council. He thought it was a good idea and said that it was already on the agenda for their next meeting.
Now if we can get someone from BikeJax, the arts community, or anyone from the Northeast or West coast, are there any other progressive groups or individuals that are out there that can run for council? We still have two years I believe, that's enough time to flood the political landscape with like-minded people to overwhelm and drown out the GOB.
Jax 2025 won't be finished until....well 2025
This is a grass roots process that is baded on citizen engagement from start to finish...so, yes, at tomorrow's meeting will likely include how "you" can get involved in implementation
I finally got what I was asking for today!
Tables were set up and signs put out- we gave our information to the organizations we could offer something to. (or at least I did)
I kind of wished they had done it this way from the beginning. We would have been able to ask questions/ get answers from people who would have been guiding us through this process. I feel like we went over some of the same material at every meeting, and only now- is direction is being given to the "HOW". I wish the time spent re-writing sentences, had directed towards this kind of direction.
I realize that most people there are from the business side, so maybe there was something in the structure of this concept that I did not understand. (I have never worked in a corporate office, so some of that "culture" is unknown to me.)
I am NOW excited about this. People who need my time and talents have my contact info, and will point me in a direction with a directive.
Mr. Warner, I know you read this, please take no offense. I am very pleased, and thankful, that this avenue was brought before me. I do not want "perfect" to be the enemy of "good". ;D
No offense taken ... I'm glad you liked the meeting today! I was overwhelmed with both the numbers of participants and the energy in the room -- it keeps me optimistic for the future of Jacksonville.
When will the next meeting be?
Oh and can the location be changed to place where JTA actually goes?
I wonder how many others didn't go because they couldn't get there easily.
I was going to just ride my bike but early that morning, I got sunburned after walking just four blocks!
After the council break. 2013 -373. Let's get ready to measure this one.
Ben- JCCI we need to kayak Downtown before 2025
DIA noticed meeting today at 10 1st floor city hall. Will there be anyone from JCCI Vision 2025? It's about Downtown.
anyone attending JAX2025 task force meetings today or tomorrow? Today's is near and dear to my heart...government transparency.

Ben,

Wanted to bump this thread especially after the 4/24/14 Special meeting of the DIA and you just have to love it when a Board member says when are we going to stop using bribes. There was a part of me that wanted to jump in and say we need another immediate bribe to get Ben Warner out in a kayak and show him this super duper restricted zone on our Waterway that extends from the Fuller Warren Bridge to the Mathews.
Ben,
I also hope that you will have in your report or and you can get all this information from Don Redman because he was there at the 4/2/14 Noticed meeting on New Docking Rules and is also the Chair of the Jacksonville Waterways Commission and that is not only that the new yet to be built floating docks on the Southbank will have only one vendor with a new 10 year no compete clause but also share with everyone the penalties for anyone violating these new docking rules. Your vessel can be seized by a host of various Govt. agencies. We need an app for that. WOW!
Visit Jacksonville!
Speaking of transit, saw an interesting Stat for zip code 32205 - Riverside, Avondale, Murray Hill, Normandy - The average commute for a resident to their place of work was 23 minutes. Meaning that people are having to drive out of the neighborhood for their workplace. And with more and more construction on the way, this number is only bound to get worse.
CRA/DIA meeting today at 3 city Hall. Vision 2025 and JCCI at Hemming Plaza at 5. Then Art Walk. All positive.
It may not be in 2025 until we have a commuter rail that also stops on Edgewood Avenue at Murray Hill and Avondake but I hope it'll be there shortly afterwards.
I really hope to see you tonight at Hemming Plaza for the Welcome to Actionville JAX2025 Celebration.
Party starts at 5, presentation at 6:30. You're all encouraged to be there -- and the beer village in Hemming Plaza will split its proceeds between DVI and JAX2025, so come thirsty!
We'll be handing out booklets and releasing a new video as well which I think you'll like. Links will be available after the event.
See you there!

Is this because most of the jobs are not downtown?
