Title: Scribes Cafe Open in Five Points. Finally an actual coffeehouse....late night!
Post by: stephendare on February 24, 2008, 10:48:53 PM
So its sunday night in Jacksonville which pretty much blows unless your baptist and ready for an exhausting round of bright singing, fund contributing and dazzling smile assaulting followed by bed at 10pm

I drove around the interior of the city after starbucks openmic on synclive, looking for something to do AFTER 930 pm.  San Marco is shut the hell down (except for the Loop)

Downtown might as well be a science fiction movie.

Springfield is a ghost town.

Riverside was a nogo.  the hookah lounge was open (with an hour wait) but otherwise avondale is closed.  Park and King is closed.   Even Five points is seriously shut down.  At 10pm on sunday, even frickin starbucks is closed.

But wait.....On lomax street, right down from wendy's in five points, where heartworks used to be, there is actually a pretty cool coffeehouse.  tons of tables, brick walls, free internet access and OPEN TILL MIDNITE.

Its called Scribes Cafe, and this place should hit a home run if only because ITS THE ONLY THING OPEN.

Luckily the coffee is actually awesome (five points apparently has a learning curve on this) the staff is friendly, and the FREE internet access is seriously high speed.

I dont mean to be thankful for small things, but hallelujah!

I hear you on the deadness of Sunday nights.  You can insert most other nights of the week there too.

I had some fantastic cuban coffee at Mambos on Mayport road the other day.  I don't like coffee, but I am now a huge fan of cuban coffee. Cuban coffee is awesome. The downtown needs more ethnic establishments like a cuban place that stays open and sells cuban coffee to nightlife goers....maybe a late night Filipino place.  Just somewhere to get food or something after 10pm.

All I can get is a 3 dollar hot dog oustide of TSI after 10pm.  come on.

Just like good little Christians.  From what I know, it's been like this in Jacksonville since the baptist elected their mayor in 20's.  wow, the baptist should start planning for the 100 year anniversery of controlling the bold new city of south?

The hours for Scribes are  7:30 am til midnight. Later if the customers are still buying. In a few weeks the completely rebuilt kitchen will be up and running for soups, sandwiches, and snackins. Soon we will also be doing early breakfast from 2-3 am if the interest is sufficient.

The only reason Stephen is out and about on a Sunday night is because Craig Van Horne fired him! haha

Thanx for sharing with the masses.

Headed down to the strip to get my hair cut tomorrow, so I'll check it out then.  If they get enough business, maybe they'll stay open even later than midnight.

I take it they've scaled back their hours since this was posted. I believe they close at 4pm now.
