Title: The pain of being a Marlins fan
Post by: thelakelander on November 14, 2012, 12:49:59 AM
WTF!!  Another fire sale.  Talk about jerking the fans around. That will surely help ticket sales at the new tax payer financed ball park....

Lol, the last World Series was 2003.  A good decade ago.  Screw the long time losers, the Marlins need another one.  ;D

25+ year Cubs fan here :)

You beat me to it.

Holy crap though, the Marlins must be unloading 70% of their payroll with this deal.

On the bright side, nothing in all of sports will ever top the Marlins firesale after the 1997 World Series though.

Shocked this franchise has any fans left.

The 100 or so fans they had this season will probably give up after this.  But hey, at least the owner got the taxpayers to pony up $360MM of his $500MM stadium.

That's the thing... salaries are guaranteed in the MLB.

So unless their salaries were part of the trade package, the Marlins would still be on the hook for the entire amount.  So even though I'm sure that they dumped most of the salary,  I'm willing to bet that they're still having to pay a pretty solid chunk for the Blue Jays.

Ex.  Team A gives a contract to Player A for 5 yrs 90M, after 2 years they dump Player A with 3 Yrs 40M left in a trade that Team B is only willing to pick up 20M in salary - Team A still has to pay out the additional 20M, and the player essentially collects 2 paychecks until he re-negotiates a new contract.

The Blue Jays picked up all of their salaries in this trade (The Marlins also gave them 4MM in cash).  That's why that didn't get much in return.  This was simply a salary dump.

I'm saying this as a Marlins fan....

The Jays got absolutely hosed in this deal.  Reyes is on the tail end of a career and Buerle was, eh.

I don't like seeing JJ go, but even with these guys on the team, we still finished in last place NLE.

Then again.....  we're talking about the same Jays that PAID Alex Rios, then promptly traded him...

Whatever you need to tell yourself I guess.  The Blue Jays will now be contenders in the AL East while the Marlins will probably lose over 100 games.  Blue Jays get two legit starters, an all star shortstop and a decent outfielder all for Yunel Escobar and some prospects.  I'd hardly consider that getting hosed.

Look, I despise Loria and his antics, but how did we do with those guys on the roster?   We lost 93 games with 'em, how much worse could it be?  He picked up those guys to put us in the playoffs - it didn't happen and he found another team willing to pick up the GINORMOUS contracts for only 4MM and picked up 3 of the Jays top prospects....

Maybe this is just years of being a Jags fan that gives me this Pollyanna outlook...    ;D

Not sure getting rid of every one of your stars is going to help the situation.  It appears Loria is focusing on other accolades like perhaps losing 120 games or seeing if he can have less then 50 people in the stands for a Wednesday day-game.

97' was definitely a fire sale but the 03' team was held together for a couple years.  After a couple of disappointing seasons, contracts were shed after the 05' season.  For me, I'm still trying to recover from having Cabrera shipped out for a couple of balls and a pair of dirty socks after the 07' season.  I'm still a fan but I haven't followed them as close, the last couple of seasons.  To me, the messed up thing here is ownership sold the city a bill of goods to get taxpayers to finance the new ballpark.  After getting it, in less than a year its back to the same old stuff.

Reyes/Ramirez/Bonifacio were awesome to watch.  They just had FUN.  Not dissimilar to watching Amezaga/Ramirez/Cabrera back in the day.

I'm still hung up on the Sanchez and Infante trades.  Those really gutted the infield.  Not to mention Uggla/Cantu before them.

But yea - Buehrle was ehh, Bell was ehh, and Reyes ended up being the only guy worth mentioning there for a while.  When Hanley was traded, Jose just didn't care as much.

It'll be interesting to see how they shape up next year, with yet another bunch of rookies and unknowns.

They really DO want to be the Indians!

I haven't given up on either.  It just doesn't hurt when things happen like this because I've grown to expect mediocrity.  Luckily, I have the Heat to overcome what has become of the Marlins, Dolphins, Hurricanes, and Panthers.

Being a Jays fan, isn't nearly as bad as some of the others have it.  Yeah, they usually are cellar dwellers but when you are 14 yrs old and get to watch Joe Carter hit a walk off to win the World Series that kinda stuff lasts a lifetime.   I'm sure there are a lot of Cubs fans who would like to have that kind of memory....

As for this trade, it gives them some hope for next year.   If it works out Anthropolis and Beeston will look like geniuses, otherwise it will be the same old story.  The AL East is never a cakewalk no matter who is on your roster.

Don't I know it! I'm a lifetime Baltimore Orioles fan and I guess you can imagine what a relief this season was. The AL East is just brutal sometimes. That said, the O's have done little to help themselves over the past 15 years.
