If you are a young professional that lives, works or plays in Riverside/Avondale there is a young professional group meeting RAP180 tomorrow at 6PM at Elevated Avondale. Free appetizers, drink specials and we'll be talking about several cool projects you can get involved with that will help the neighborhood. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and more importantly make an impact on your community. What's the worse that can happen? You'll eat some free food and enjoy cheap drinks.
Hope to see a few of you there tomorrow!
I'll be there.
I'll try to be there as well. I'd like to start getting more involved with the communities that I'm involved with both professionally and personally.

Awesome, so glad you'll stop by tomorrow!
Up
I consider myself one (perhaps erroneously?), but what exactly is a young professional to you?
Generally 35 and younger, however if you are older... please stop by anyway. We need some creative minds on a few projects that will promote walkability in the neighborhood.
Hope there is enough parking...
I'd love to come but I've got too many meetings on my docket this afternoon. Is there a way to review what will be discussed to see how I can plug in?
Why have this meeting at a place that is fighting growth in Avondale???
We'll be discussing projects that will help the 'growth problems' in Riverside/Avondale and need help to implement them. It's time to start presenting solutions instead of bickering about the problems. If that type of thing interests you, you may want to consider attending.

Amusing coming from a group associated with RAP. Good luck.

Worst case scenario (barring you don't drink and don't enjoy the free appetizers), you are proven right and you know what's going on aside from what you see on a computer screen. Best case scenario we as the next generation of Jacksonville's concerned citizens has a chance for a conversation about bettering our city.

I was a skeptic at first, but I think that something positive will come from young people showing up and speaking out. If it seems like the old guard is trying to bring us over to the dark side, I'm going to start flipping tables. As long as I'm there, there will be no WLA-style rhetoric.

Agree. I really do hope something good comes of it. I just wish this was an initiative outside of RAP as I believe that organization is one of the major impediments to solution building. RAP and its leadership are not interested in solutions. Also wish it was open to those older than 35.

I hear you. I am beyond skeptical when it comes to RAP though. RAP180 is designed to bring young people into RAP's fold, is it not? That's a problem. Its not the RAP membership that is restricting growth in Avondale, its RAP's leadership. In my opinion, a sub-organization like RAP180 is only adding weight to that leadership.

Maybe the overheard conversation could actually cause someone to see a point of view not typically seen in the area.
I stress this point most times when the discussion comes up... Avondale has a walking issue, not a parking one - yet. Proactive is supposed to be a good thing.

Or RAP180 is a subversive group gaining inside access to RAP to advance a radically moderate approach to historic preservation and neighborhood planning.
Joking aside, I don't believe any group is fully lost with people as awesome as Carmen Godwin in a leadership position and Mike Field shaping its direction. And if Ben Davis sneaks his way into the group, look out, Riverside is just going to get better. Its easier to fix the structure in place (work from the inside) than to start anew or change it from the outside. Aside from what we might judge as recent missteps, RAP has been a positive, on the whole, for this community. New blood might be just what it needs.

Not to worry, you can park in any of the driveways on Pine or Riverside. I will be dropping my recyclable off there as well.
A roundabout way of saying I will be there.

How did the event go?

We're having another general social at Elevated Avondale from 6-8pm on Dec 4th if you are interested in learning about ways to get involved in the neighborhood.
