I just stumbled across this new BRT presentation at www.GoBRT.org
http://www.gobrt.org/Callaghan_TRB_BRT_Funding_presentation_Jan_08.pdf
At this point, JTA still claims they don't know what our system will really cost taxpayers, but if GoBRT is right, it will be an arm and a leg...maybe two. Most of the new systems planned are all smaller than ours and costing more than JTA's original (now hidden) estimates to construct.
LA Orange Line BRT (2005) â€" 14 miles for $350 million = $25 million per mile
Hartford New Britain Busway (proposed) â€" 9.4 miles for $458 million = $48.7 million per mile
Pittsburgh West Busway (2000) â€" 5 miles for $258 million = $51.6 million per mile
Cleveland Euclid Corridor (2008) â€" 5.7 miles for $168 million = $29.5 million per mile
Pittsburgh East Busway Ext. (2003) â€" 2.3 miles for $68 million = $29.6 million per mile
at this rate, JTA's system will definately be over $1 billion and will become the largest dedicated busway system in the United States.
Ouch! GoBRT is the BRT lobbying group. That must really put a damper on their sales pitch.
Now boys, before you go off the deep end here, remember what Monkey Ed at JTA said...
"BRT just keeps getting cheaper, and the prices are falling every day..."
