BIRMINGHAM, Ala. â€" The Urban Land Institute has awarded Birmingham's Railroad Park its Urban Open Space Award, which includes a $10,000 cash prize. The park, owned by the city of Birmingham and managed by the nonprofit Railroad Park Foundation, integrates 19 acres of urban green space with the city's railroad heritage.

The park is adjacent the city's downtown rail corridor, just southeast of the Amtrak station. The route hosts both CSX and Norfolk Southern traffic along with Amtrak's daily Crescent.

The Urban Land Institute, established in 1936, is a nonprofit education and research organization. New York City's railroad-themed High Line park was a runner up for the prize.

More information on the park can be found on its webpage at www.railroadpark.org.
