Is this the case nationwide? K-Mart just seems like a failing brand to me.

Retail is dying. Look for tons more within the next decade. Places like K Mart are just the bottom of the barrel so they're the first to feel it.

I worked at Store 4286 in the late 70s/early 80s.  I made a lot of good friends there and we had many an
after work parking lot party there.  I guess all good things come to an end.  RIP 4286.
