Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:
QuoteThe Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a vital economic engine in Northeast Ohio. Since opening in 1995, the Museum has welcomed more than 8 million visitors and driven more than $1.7 billion dollars in economic impact to the regional economy. The Museum is known across the United States and throughout the world as a “must-see†music destination.

Using the Armory building for this would work very well. There is room for permanent and temporary displays, an auditorium for concerts, it is centrally located downtown.
Do you think this could work for Jacksonville? Is there another Southern Rock Hall of Fame?
If we are going to dream, let's dream big. Let's celebrate Jacksonville's contribution to Southern Rock.
gimme three steps
I like the idea. When we were in Cleveland a number of years back we went to the Waterfront and there were a number of options to see. We were short on time as I recall and opted for a free tour of a Navy ship.
Sheclown, How about "Southern Rock Hall of Fame and History"
Or
"Southern History"
The armory built in 1915.
601 East Church St. A demo site right now but the same bricks used in that construction in 1915. just wondering.
It can only compliment the Jacksonville Historical Society on Hogans Creek.
And what's a bit of mold? a few plumbing problems? It doesn't need to be anything fancy....It is SOUTHERN ROCK after all.
Swampy.
We could house the "Southern Rock" HOF... The SouthEastern Rock HOF, The Eastern Rock HOF...
If we included South America in the mix, we could do the Northern Rock HOF... We could expand it such as to allow for the Western Rock HOF as well.
Cleveland has nothing on us.
In fact, let's go for all the marbles: Third Rock Hall Of Fame.
Why isn't the city interested, Stephen?
Let's make it happen. What can we all do to help?
Thanks Stephen. Sent him a message.
Perhaps it is time to at least ask...."why not?"
The Sax Seafood Restaurant is an excellent location, as is the club where Ray Charles first played for the masses. Let's kick this into high gear.

Ever since the time Stephen mentioned the idea of Genovar's as a tourist attraction where people would buy snow globes featuring the artists who performed there, I've wanted to see that become a reality. I'll write to Mr. Simpson for sure.
I had expressed the same idea a few years back on this site. I think it would be a pretty big draw. My suggestion was the old Stanton High School in Lavilla.
Okay... I stand rebuked.
Sorry for injecting negativism.
Cleveland's is purpose built at 150,000 SF and brings in millions a year to downtown Cleveland. The Armory is 80,000 SF and has a layout that should work well, including a theater/ auditorium. While there are many locations that seem suitable for historic reasons, this one is a good one for commercial reasons. It is large enough, it is cool enough and it is at one of the prime entry into downtown. All the commercial reasons the Armory was not suited for a social service use makes it great for this use.
I've always liked this idea, but why not call it Southern Music Hall of Fame? I know the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn't only include "rock artists", but calling it Southern Music Hall of Fame may make it more inclusive of all types of Southern Music. It would also potentially limit the issues with defining Southern Rock. For instance would CCR be allowed in, despite being from California, yet having a bluesy, southern sound?
I am Hugh Simpson third generation from J'ville and co-founder of Southern Music Hall of Fame. My best email for quick response is hughmsimpson@gmail.com. Even this 66 yr young guy uses an Ice Cream Sandwich Android tablet:-) .
I did have conversations with Terri Lorrrence years back about putting SMHF in J'ville. I would love to see it there because of the greatest Southern music history J'ville already has.
I have added new post at http://www.southernmusichall.com and there we can share suggestions and ideas as well as here.
Thanks and let's make Southern Music Hall of Fame a REALITY in J'ville this time!

We'll also be running a story about this on the front page of MJ tomorrow. It will include a map of potential sites in and around downtown that may be suitable for such a use.
What are the potential funding sources and estimated costs Hugh? I imagine the initial costs may be a little steep (by Jacksonville standards), but the payoff for the city could be huge. That might be just what we need to get people to stop in Jax for a day or two on their way to Orlando/Miami. Not to mention the great concerts and events it could attract. Also imagine yearly induction concerts with southern greats and new artists.
Absolutely, City Life. I see it too!
Hi Hugh! Glad to have you join MJ! I look forward to great discussions and am so glad to hear of your expertise.
@ CityLife. We need a foundation to fund raise. I have a name...."Gimme three steps..."
Are we going to communicate this to the DIA.? This is something they need to be aware of asap. Has anyone sent anything to them yet?
The Armory is such a cool building anyway, and a music hall of fame would be awesome there. What a good idea that is, She Clown. Surely there's funding out there somewhere for something like this.
We could put it in the first floor of the parking garage that they are building across from the landing.
or just in the Landing itself...there's plenty of room on the second floor
Any place would be fabulous, but if a historic structure could be re-purposed -- it would be a double blessing to the city.
The Armory, if it is not already, could be a Landmark, then even a non-profit could qualify for tax credits that could be sold and help funding the project. Historic structures like the Trio have qualified for historic grants and such, so this could too. Places like the landing won't offer those types of benefits.
lakelander, I did not see a map of possible locations in the story.
There really are a lot of different programs and grants that could be used for the Armory building/Southern Music Hall of Fame, and I'd suspect that some of the cultural groups/non-profits who did look at the building weren't aware of them. Heck, it wouldn't even surprise me if the JEDC/City weren't aware of some.
If anyone is really serious about putting this together, I'd be happy to point you in the right direction for some grants/redevelopment opportunities.
John P, here are some underutilized structures scattered throughout downtown that could work for something like this. Keep in mind, this map is only to spur converstation and not anything scientific. Some sites are much larger than others. For example, the Snyder is roughly 12,000 square feet, while the Armory is 80,000. However, the Snyder could utilize Hemming as an extension of its programming, attract customers to surrounding businesses and form some synergy with the library and MOCA Jax. On the other hand, the Armory is large enough that you'd have room for expansion or complementing uses, set up similar to the studios in the CoRK warehouses.
Anyway, 5 out 6 on this map (the Prime Osborn excluded) have some type of live performance venue or auditorium. 5 out of 6 are city owned (Annie Lytle excluded). I'm sure there are more opportunities out there.

It HAS to be right smack dab in the middle of the core. What better place than Snyder?
Why does it have to be smack dab in the core? Snyder is a good suggestion, but I don't know why it has to be there. :-)
Here's another suggestion, while we are at it. How about the Claude Nolan Cadillac Building? There is a parking garage next door where the hotel was. I think they are being marketed together. We'd have to find funding for the environmental clean up from the gasification plant, or convince the current owner he won't sell/lease them without doing it, but it's a thought. No stage, and I'm clueless on acoustics, but if the attached warehouse could be made acoustically sound, what a great concert venue it could be, with the exhibits in the other building.
Who wants to kayak next to the Armory?
Thats a fun paddle next to the Southern Rock Hall of Fame.
I'm not seeing to many negatives to this.
I want to say that I went to a concert in an Armory up in Wilkes-Barre Scranton in the late 70's
I love the idea and location.
I like the idea of conjoining it with the Florida Theater.

YEEEEEHAWWWW!
From the looks of their website they have some work to do. I'm left wondering if this is some kinda fly by night pipe dream. You have my attention but it needs to be done right.
kreger, it is a big goal and will take some time. We are not committed to anything, specifically, at this point, but the IDEA of it.
