Actually, he called him a "miserable
individule":
Quote
Pete Hull never expected to be called a “miserable individual†in need of prayers when he wrote an email this month criticizing a Jacksonville City Council vote.
But that’s the response he got from Councilman Don Redman after Hull said council members should be ashamed of voting against expanding the city’s anti-discrimination policies to cover gays and lesbians.
Hull, 31, said in an Oct. 4 email to all council members that the vote wrongly injected religion into public policy and hurts the city’s ability to attract new business. Redman emailed a reply on the same day with a few misspellings.
“You sound like a misguided & miserable individule [sic], who needs our prayers,†Redman wrote. “I pray that god will speak to your heart & show you the truthes [sic] of his word.â€

I'm drowning.
Did Redman really use a small g for God? Doesn't the city's email program have spell check, for crying out loud? If people have elected someone who can't spell simple elementary school level vocabulary words to an important job like running the city, at least the email program should do spell check and not let us know it.
For the record, I disagree with the council vote against 296. God spoke to my heart and showed me the truths of his word. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Love thy neighbor as thyself. Be ye kind one to another. I could go on, but you get the point.
As a certified awful speller I'm not going to criticize someone for their spelling and grammar errors. But errors or no, you can't cover up that awful content.
Just sign me up for the "miserable individules" society.
Good point, Tachchale. You're right. Phonetically I can read it. (Unfortunately.) Oh, and I guess I'm a member of the "miserable individules" society too.
Are either of you elected officials that have to abide by sunshine laws - knowing that every e-mail or letter that comes out of your office can and will be read by others - especially one criticizing a voting constituent?
Yeah, I didn't think so.
I hope it's just another nail in the coffin.
What's hilarious is that Redman NEVER, and I mean never, responds to email.
Now I know why.
Are you mad at me and at Tachachale for commenting, Non-RedNeck? No, I'm not an elected official. Did I imply I was? Did I leave you with the impression I agreed with Councilman Redman's comments? I was agreeing with Tachachale that I should not be worrying about criticizing the spelling. I believe I made my point about the content.
Actually, I think Non-Redneck was implying that one had to live up to higher standards (ie spelling) than the average person if his emails were a matter of public record.

^^ This.
I'm not an elected official or, for that matter, a person with any real authority at all, but I do proof-read every e-mail that I send which is work related - for spelling, grammar, content and most importantly, did I get my point across.
As someone who solicits bids from other companies, if there's multiple errors in the spelling and/or grammar and/or content, then how seriouisly can I take their bid? Maybe they didn't scope the job correctly, maybe they didn't notice the details....
So, again, what Sheclown said.
I think the funniest (or saddest I suppose) thing about this is that Redman replied on his iPhone. I applaud the councilman for somehow defeating that liberal spell check not once, but twice!

Or he's just misspelled those words enough times that his phone said "screw it, do it your way!"
Sooooo many things can be said about our city from this one little exchange.
-Our government officials are backwoods dolts that aren't fit to have their secretaries jobs.
-We're dumb enough to vote for them.
-That's sad.
-We need drastic change or we're about 30 years away from watering our plants with Brawndo! The Thirst Mutilator

The spelling thing is bad enough, but I've known extremely smart people who cannot spell to save their lives. The bigger concern is an elected official basically telling one of his constituents that he needs Jesus. Until religion is totally removed from the governing of our city, state, and country, we will continue to spend time (and money) dealing with issues about which there should be no room for debate.
Yeah, in my mind, the question is this: is it unconstitutional to use government resources to proselytize? I think so.
(Leaving aside the spelling challenges and uncivil and insulting language.)
This is worthy of a national news blurb, how embarassing. So of all the emails he has left alone in his career, he goes out of his way to reply via iPhone to this particular email? Step back and think about what that implies here because it is absolutely hysterical.
When you're away from your computer and you're checking emails with a mobile device, you only reply to those that need a response asap. He just couldn't wait to reply to that citizen's email, and he was probably red in the face as he typed his response! What a sad little man he is (his kids should be absolutely ashamed of their father...I would have either run away or killed myself if Redman were my dad).
As a person who regularly and constantly needs Jesus, I cringe when the boss man's name is tossed around like that.
(Although I understand needing to grab some authority if your credibility tank is empty.)
Jesus' harshest criticism was saved for the religious hypocrites of his time. Just sayin'
Redman is an embarassment to this city.
May I commend Captain Z on his use of the word "dolt". Given the circumstances, no other word would have done.....

Thank you, thank you. It is a real treat when you can use that description of a person and have it capture their essence so completely.

I am not very concerned with his misspellings, considering the whole email is a bunch of crazy from a maniac unfit to lead a conga-line, nevermind a city. However, "individule" and "truthes" are more worrying than "god," particularly because "god" is an actual word even without the capitalization. In fact, you are just assuming that his beliefs require him to capitalize the "G." Not every person that believes in a diety has that ever-famous 11th commandment of the Judeo-Christian catechism: "Thou shalt use thine shift key only for Me; Caps Lock ONLY WHEN ANGRY!"
Anywho, Bativac sums my opinion up well. His misspelling of God/god is not a concern. The fact that he invokes his chosen diety when making otherwise horribly uninformed decisions about our city is a major concern.

I've said it before, but Don Redneck seems to be a fu&*# idiot in every way. Plain & simple. And his grammatical/spelling errors would make a grade school student point & laugh.
I hope you're reading this, Don (if you even have the ability). You, and people like you are, are exactly what's wrong with this town.
The guy is a colossal joke. So sad. Just one of the reasons I got out of Cowford.

Here we go again. The city and the people of the church.
One of the greatest gifts to mankind, and yes, even to each citizen within the city core, is that necessary and beautiful quality we call freedom. Any church entity or body which is set upon existing within the city core, occupying such a large segment of its land, and is inclined to control or restrict the freedoms of others who live, work, or visit the core, should be considered contrary to the economic dynamism and revitalization of the city core. A city, by its very nature, must be free to grow naturally, without the constraints and controls inherent in a church or religious environment.
It’s a shame that we have so many people in our city government who seem to either be comfortably involved in this large church, or who pretend that they are, so as to gain the vote or be accepted into the fraternity wielding the local power. A city must be free of excessive and continuous church influence, else it cannot evolve naturally according to the needs, expectations, dreams, and efforts of a genuine and honest population with secular aims and inclinations.
Not to be Johnny Raincloud here, but when you get an email response from someone, who NEVER responds to emails, let alone on a controversial issue like this, and it has a silly amount of misspells....smells like someone either hacked his account, borrowed his phone or is pulling someone's leg.

Redman stands by what he wrote, though he said he “probably was a little short with him in my response.â€
“It was an instant response, and I probably should have done better than that,†he said. “But that was basically the way I felt at the time. I actually felt he was a misguided individual. I didn’t buy what he was trying to say as facts, so I wrote a short response and did say I would be praying for him.â€

It has long been rumored that Mr. Redman is dyslexic and that his staff has to read things to him.
I believe I read something in this thread about him being term-limited.
Is this his last term?
^Yes, thank God. However, he's still got nearly three years left.

Got it. If he says he sent it, agreed, send him back to school or learn to use the spell check.

I think it may be a bit late in the game to fix this :P
If the man is dyslexic, I'm sorry I made fun of his spelling. Actually I'm sorry I started everyone making fun at all. It wasn't kind and I shouldn't have done it.
I stand by disagreeing with his stance on 296, however.
I am in no way defending Don Redman's actions. However, I remember reading recently that this forum's civility rules prohibit attacking a person directly.
You can criticize their actions, (for example, "what the councilman did was terrible, inexcusable, etc.). What you can't do is write something like "the councilman is a "fill in the blank with a derogatory statement".
For the sake of the credibility of the forum, I would appreciate it if our members would remember this, and hopefully our moderators will apply the civility rules uniformly.
See reply #22 above.

If he is dyslexic I apologize. He is apparently bigoted and feels justified in his religious convictions to be such ( as does Ms Daniels)
Bunch of saints we have in City Council. We should be ashamed for calling them anything but perfect. :sarcasm:

Pull all my public record email responses from Redman if you want analysis.
So who wants to go kayaking and fishing under the brand new No Fishing signs that was never before Waterways. As a bonus I 'll bring a deck of cards and we can play go fish.
Don Redman isn't part of this forum, nothing was said directly to anyone, and he is a public figure. Hence, open to ridicule. So come off your high horses, guys. That would be like me calling George Bush an idiot. Well, he is. And so is Redman. Call it like you see it & stop trying to be all "pc". The city & its people have no time to pussyfoot around subjects because you may or may not hurt someone's little feelings.
Besides, I think a better use of your time would be asking how in the hell a seemingly illiterate man, who can not only not read or write but can't even speak well or hold a rational thought in his head, got into such a position in the first place. But I'm sure you all know the answer already to that one (and its one that you won't likely change anytime soon), so let's concentrate on stupid stuff. ::)
^ for that matter , the same could be said for others in Council, one in particular, EVEN LESS (if that is possible) qualified , than Redman.
