Title: Greasy Spoon Update: Arlington's University Diner
Post by: DetroitInJAX on February 11, 2008, 07:22:18 PM
Since all of the posts in the dining section pretty much outline experiences with Jacksonville's more "well-heeled" eateries, I figured Id talk about my favorite "greasy spoon" in the city, the University Diner.

Serving breakfast and lunch 7 days a week, and dinner Monday through Friday, the diner cooks up a great menu of "comfort food".  The breakfasts are hearty and consist of all the old favorites (just like the Fox Restaurant in Avondale).  Lunch and dinner are strictly comfort food, with burgers and sandwiches (the open faced turkey is great), as well as a full selection fork food like Salisbury Steak.  The meatloaf is what they are really known for, and its actually pretty amazing.  Almost like Mom makes.  They have nightly specials too.

Im actually typing this while waiting for my food to arrive (which is Chicken Casino, the special), as they have free wifi.  The walls are decorated with license plates, signs, and all sorts of New England Patriots souvenirs (the owner, Steve, is a huge Pats fan).  They have 3 beers on tap and a salad bar, as well.  The crowd is mostly local Arlington residents, cops, and a full compliment of JU students.  You can even pick up a copy of the Folio on your way in!

The diner is located on the northeast corner of Merrill and Cesery roads.  The prices are reasonable, the food is great (if youre in to American comfort food), and the staff is friendly.  Ive been coming here since I started attending JU (back in 2004) when the place was on University Blvd. near the Arlington Expy, which is now Lupita's Mexican Restaurant.

Come check it out sometime!

So glad I stumbled across this thread!  I used to teach the owners' kids at a local dance studio.  Awesome and friendly family and so gracious.  I love The University Diner.

Definitely one of the better 'greasy spoons' in town.  And it's not a chain.  True mom-and-pop shop.

Check it out!
