If you want to know a really really fun fact.

You can actually watch Joe Kittinger free fall from 102,800 feet in Project Excelsior back in 1960.  Before any human had flown in space.  No one knew what to expect.

https://www.google.com/search?q=Joseph+Kittinger&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=rcs#hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_nf=1&tok=u3GQsT-kz7GpfsjKmb-GQA&pq=joseph%20kittinger&cp=17&gs_id=5kv&xhr=t&q=Joseph%20Kittinger%20video&pf=p&client=firefox-a&hs=XIf&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&channel=rcs&sclient=psy-ab&oq=Joseph+Kittinger+&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=c9983aef4eaabb75&biw=1600&bih=759 (https://www.google.com/search?q=Joseph+Kittinger&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=rcs#hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_nf=1&tok=u3GQsT-kz7GpfsjKmb-GQA&pq=joseph%20kittinger&cp=17&gs_id=5kv&xhr=t&q=Joseph%20Kittinger%20video&pf=p&client=firefox-a&hs=XIf&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&channel=rcs&sclient=psy-ab&oq=Joseph+Kittinger+&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=c9983aef4eaabb75&biw=1600&bih=759)

But that's not the really really fun fact.

Halfway up he lost pressure in his hand and therefore it was exposed in the elements.  This man, literally stuck his hand into outer space.

http://books.google.com/books?id=ng9i5IMtlpsC&pg=PA36&dq=kittinger+hand&ei=J4ZeSs6JLZSqkgS97N3IBg&client=firefox-a#v=onepage&q=kittinger%20hand&f=false (http://books.google.com/books?id=ng9i5IMtlpsC&pg=PA36&dq=kittinger+hand&ei=J4ZeSs6JLZSqkgS97N3IBg&client=firefox-a#v=onepage&q=kittinger%20hand&f=false)

But that's not the really really fun fact.

Nope, the really really fun fact is that Joe Kittinger went to high school at Bolles.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kittinger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kittinger)

I hope they can pull this off by Thursday.  This is some pretty exciting stuff.  I just think the odds of getting less than 2 mph wind through 800 feet is pretty slim.

The next weather window for Felix Baumgartner and Red Bull Stratos opens on Sunday Oct 14 - a three day pre-alert as well as daily weather updates will follow and lead into the next launch day.

Watching him jump out of the pod was pretty cool, but after you saw him fall for 4 minutes, it got kinda anticlimactic. I wonder how much he got paid for that

Once the chute opened, I agree. But up until that point, I thought it was pretty cool. I was a bit worried or concerned about the possibility something could go wrong. I guess I knew it would be okay, but right before he jumped, my wife said, "we're not going to watch a guy die on live TV, are we" and it then occurred to me that it could go wrong.

I'm glad he's okay.

Shame about all the buffering on YouTube, though.

Yeah... the youtube AND redbull site were less than optimum.  I kept having to refresh or reload.  Nearing jump altitude I thought I might not get back... CNN broadcasted up to the jump... then cut away... probably in case something went wrong.  But...

He did break the speed of sound... and...

Now holds the record for highest balloon flight... and...

Highest jump... he missed the free fall record by a few seconds...

Anti climactic?  I suppose... after all it IS 2012... our newest Mars rover has quickly become blase'

I wasn't sure how the cameras would be able to provide quality footage of the jump, but I was a little disappointed in the resolution/tracking of the cameras during freefall.  You could see when he was tumbling (which was very scary), but once he got into the delta position he just looked like a grain of rice.  It was still amazing to see and I hope that the benefits of this achievement aid in the progression of space tourism and travel.

One wonders how the guy is able to walk!

Seems he had to work with a psychologist to overcome claustrophobia caused by being in the suit and a tiny capsule for hours.  I can understand that!

He should have worked with the hypnotherapist here in Riverside who specializes in people who can't go into MRI machines because of claustrophobia.

Discovery Channel ran the whole thing, live, with minimal commentary. I don't know about you guys but it was one of the most exciting things I'd ever seen. My wife and I and a couple friends were watching it and a couple of us, our hands were trembling, we were so nervous for the guy. Especially when he went into what looked like an uncontrolled tumble.

My family was the same way. We were on the edge of our seats. When he opened the capsule door and you could see the curvature of the earth from his POV, my kids were screaming.

Here is the first minute of the jump via his head cam. Lot of spinning...

My bet is there will be more video coming... his suit had at least one camera.  The resolution of the ground track cameras was not bad considering he was over 24 miles away at the jump...

I'm going to go ahead and cue the WTF NRW chorus....

I'm just not impressed.  A jump is a jump, right?  I think that basers take a much bigger chance than Baumgardner, they only have a few seconds to deploy their chute, and less than a minute to land, pack up and avoid the cops.

This guy had a pressurized suit, a specially crafted weather balloon and over 4 minutes of freefall....  once he was back in a more traditional atmosphere, it was status quo.

The only thing that makes his jump better than the others is he had better funding.  The next guy (with better funding) will probably leave the atmosphere in a rocket propelled vehicle and freefall in a vacuum.

NRW-  You do know that Baumgartner was a famous base jumper, right?  He has jumped off the Petronas towers in Malaysia, Taipei 101 in Taipei, the Jesus satue in RIO (which was the record at the time for the lowest base jump ever), and he has experimented with a carbon fiber wing that he used to cross the english channel and race a plane WITHOUT AN ENGINE.  Felix has done just about everything you can do that involves a parachute.  Look up his top 10 jumps for references.  He said this is his greatest jump ever, so I believe him.

I honestly don't know anything about him, but it wouldn't surprise me that this was his best jump - to be so high that you see the curvature of the earth the way he saw it....

Let me rephrase a little for clarity - I'm not impressed with the feat.  His jump doesn't take any special talent or skill, just a lot of money.  The height of the jump itself was fairly impressive, but the next guy with a few mil to burn, as I said, will probably come from orbit.

I'm not trying to take anything away from him, it's just that you or I could do the same thing with the proper funding.

I doubt it.  I've been tandem jumping about a dozen times and have loved it from the first one.  There was no fear.  I'm also one of those idiots that like jumping from bridges.  I've only been ticketed once, in Pensacola, but it was me and 4 other squids that got tired of waiting in traffic on the way to the beach - we were about 3/4 up - in a word, awesome.

lol... I have jumped from a few things myself... but a few feet, or hundred feet, or even thousand feet... pales in comparison to 128k and 800+ mph... just sayin...

I agree.

People kept calling him courageous. I disagree. Jumping out of the pod definitely took los cojones, so to speak, but he was clearly an adrenaline junkie from the start.

If the guy was really courageous, he'd donate his "earnings" to charity.

I haven't seen or read any interviews, but in a full suit and mask, I think you'd lose all concept of speed during the freefall - it's not like there's anything around to judge yourself, just a big, brown sphere getting closer and closer.

Now if he were to pass an F-18 that was in a dive.....

With regards to the height, all it takes is one step, whether you're a few hundred or a few hundred thousand feet up, you just wait longer before deploying your chute.

I had probably the worst experience that one could fathom, and the really f-d up part was that I enjoyed structured nature of it, but I couldn't handle the lack of responsibility / critical thinking.  A quick timeline:

Boot camp at Great Lakes - loved it.  My first winter out of the southeast and the mind games that went into it - awesome.

Arrive in Pensacola for A-School and spend 8 months waiting on a class to open - cleaning the barracks for 8 months sucks.

Finally start A-School, but decided to take the AT(o) instead of AT(i) or wait another 4-8 months for a class to open. - really wanted to get out of the Barracks - for those that don't know what I'm talking about, if you were stationed there, but not in a school, you were 'stationed' at the barracks and your day consisted of cleaning the barracks (6-2) & standing duty when needed.  Pretty much sucked.

Almost 2 years into a 4 year commitment, I end up in J'ville in an S-3 Squadron (not a land base as I wanted, see the schooling note above) that had just gotten back from deployment, so what did I get to do as they wound back down - that's right another 8 months of cleaning.....  1st Lt at your service, sir.  Only this time, I get the 11-7 shift which pretty much fucked my weeks.  In that entire time, a spot in the shop never opened, and we were scheduled to do work-ups on the Truman.  Basically a 3 month deployment to St. Thomas which was pretty cool, but again, 3 months of split shift cleaning.

At 38 months I applied for and was granted early discharge with the additional months added to my reserve status.

Basically I spent the better part of 4 years learning how to wax floors and fold clothes, but join the Navy see the World....  meh.  See the terlit sparkle.    ;D

Postscript, my younger brother, through talking to me and based on my experience joined the Air Force - to stay close to home - his first duty station - Osaka, Japan.  He's now been all over the world, including 2 stints in Afghanistan and is currently a TI in San Antonio.

FML.

I had a 98 ASVAB, and wanted to drive a sub, he a 70 something and wanted to stay home.

yep... that was effed up.  That stuff can happen when the "pipeline" gets clogged.  Your apparent joy of jumping from things may have made you a good rescue swimmer.  I was a good enough swimmer but after tasting the thrill of jumping out of perfectly good helicopters... I opted for the P-3.  Took a year of training before getting to an active squadron... then went to more places than most can imagine... and never spent a day on a ship! (Unless 10 days aboard a submarine counts)

in Pensacola, but it was me and 4 other squids

Aircrew candidate by chance? 8)

3 of the 5...  my roommate and I were at AT school.

Someone wasn't intelligent enough to not admit to using a certain grassy substance prior to enlistment which made a lot of opportunities unavailable - nuke and aircrew were the two that I wanted but couldn't get waivered.

rofl... I lied... did 20 as an AW...

FML.

Where were you stationed mostly?  There's only a couple of P-3 bases, I think, here and Whitbey Island, WA.  I don't know any of the oversea bases other than is it Recitivak, Iceland (sp?)?

Did you get the benefit of at least one flight plan a month that always seemed to magically have a refueling / landing in a tax-free / haz. pay zone?   ;)

Home bases were... Brunswick Maine, Moffett Field California, NAS Jax, Barbers Point Hawaii.  Overseas bases are to numerous to get into here.

And yes... tax free and hazardous pay zones/ combat pay zones were always a desired stop... though duty in those sectors was... um... less than desireable...lol

The Discovery Channel had incredible live coverage.

To me, this was one of the great live television events of my lifetime.

Crazy tense, bordering on creepy in a 2001: A Space Odyssey kind of way, watching the altitude meter climb way past 120,000 feet, the trouble with the heat visor, wondering if the door was going to open as the cabin depressureized, etc.

Seeing the capsule door roll open to reveal the earth below was one of those true "Holy shit" moments.

Can't even begin to fathom how insane it must have been to watch that grainy Moon Landing live footage back in the late 60s.

Not sure if it's available online anywhere, but Discovery closed their broadcast with a stunning music video with clips of the entire day.

I agree - watching it, I kind of got a sense of how my dad must have felt, watching the first moon landing as a teenager. I mean, that door opening... That's when my heart skipped a beat. And the guy going out on that step, giving a little salute, then letting go..... Wow!

I was so wrapped up in the moment that it felt like I was the one falling out of that capsule.  Definitely a moment I will remember forever.

I watched it a friends' house because they had a bigger TV.  Ours was 10".  Can still get goose bumps looking at the picture I took of the TV screen.

We all went outside and looked up at the moon; finding it wonderful that we had just seen something that had happened up there just minutes ago.

If nothing else marvel at the technology. The suit was bigger and bulkier in 1969 moon landing. The cameras were bigger and bulkier in the 60s.  Asside from the live feed from the moon landing all pictures from space and the 1960 jump were from film that was recovered. Nothing was live feed..............in color and high definition. Nothing was on a 33" screen flat screen much less a 60" screen.
