Title: Downtown Activities Ideas
Post by: comncense on September 07, 2012, 03:04:20 PM
In light of the post about has Art Walk gotten stale, I thought it'd be interesting to discuss ideas about activities we'd like to see held downtown. Based on the diversity that we have on the site, I'm sure the ideas should be great.

Here's one thing that stuck popped into my head a few months ago. I'd like to see the City hold a big block party once a year on Bay Street for the start of Summer. Just like the Beaches has the "Opening of the Beaches" celebration, Downtown should have something like that. This Bud Light Lime commercial stuck out to me and I thought it would be great if we could do something like this on Bay Street. Incorporate live music, DJ's, have all the downtown bars, restaurants, food trucks participate and sell drinks and food and have a party like it shows in this commercial.

You would think that... Until you go to the City with an idea for a charity kickball game at the Shipyards property(not park) and they tell you that you need a permit, insurance, rent police and fire/rescue and need portable restrooms.   And we wonder why downtown is dead  ;)

If Bay St. is not a possibility (traffic would be horrible with people and other stuff in the roads) maybe it could be held on the old power station site. plenty of open space for people and plenty of parking nearby

Wow. That's a great way to suck the life out of a kickball game. When I was a kid, we played kickball and tackle football in the middle of the street. The only threats to end the competition was the street lights coming on or the ball flying into Mr. Flower's manicured lawn.

Sure, but you (Field) are talking about a sanctioned event.  Ask BenSays, ChrisWUF, WMNuss or anyone else that practices law and you'll understand why the city requires the blood of your firstborn to put on event....

That being said, you can put on plenty of 'un-sanctioned' events in public areas.  Planned for or not, are the cops really going to run off 100 people playing in a (using the term extremely loosely) pickup kickball tournament?
