It's a success because someone took a chance to pull something off themselves instead of waiting for others or the city to do something. If anything it's a form of tactical urbanism, just like Jax Truckies, the Cash Mobs, pub crawls, Preservation SOS, etc.

I'd need a bit more information - I can't imagine "deregulation" had anything to do with it. Unless, of course, there used to be anti-crusing regulations or something ::)
Do we really care why it is successful? The fact of the matter is that it has been very successful so far and I for one hope to see it continue. Kudos to the organizers!!

I think understanding the reasons for success is a necessary component for recreating success. As a general rule.

John Wells just did it. He used facebook and his passion (classic cars) and hooked into an idea.
He brought SAMBA on board and Chris Parrish used her connections (local artists/bands) to kick it up.
What John didn't do is commission a study that cost the taxpayers $5,000 to find out the feasibility. He took a chances and ....boom. He has done more for Springfield's Main Street this summer than has been done since....ever?
I just heard that an estimated 10,000 people attended the last Main Street Cruise.
10,000 times 12 months.
That's a lot of people coming downtown/Springfield on a regular basis.

That's basically it. This stuff isn't rocket science. Jacksonville is full of smart and passionate people. When allowed to use their individual creativity without unnecessary constraints, good things tend to happen.
