Title: Incredible! The Oklahoma City Miracle!
Post by: Ocklawaha on August 06, 2012, 07:37:37 PM
One vast construction site, Oklahoma City is pulling away from the pack, leaving the 'also ran's' in a cloud of red dust. A city that will absolutely knock your socks off, alive, vibrant, walkable and incredibly packed full of fun and adventure.

With over $1.2 billion dollars in new development Oklahoma City's growth is organic, born of a hard scrabble pioneer determination.

Watch for future MJ photo articles on this miracle in the prairie. Trust me folks, OKC is the 'new' Dallas. ....And there is already a theme song, don't sweat the small stuff, this city is a rising star.

My Day?

Temperature 101, wind SW 25 mph, no chance of rain, a spirit so bold it's palatable, people everywhere, welcome to OKLAHOMA CITY!

Standing in the shadow of a bold new artistic interpretation of the scissor tail fly-catcher, one can plainly see that OKC is the new Dallas.

Why is it the new Dallas? During my last trip to Dallas (2008), it was still slow for a city its size. I think what OKC is doing is more impressive, given its size. MAPS appears to be a great revitalization plan.

Resigning all their young players will be a miracle

^^^LOL

I agree that OKC is making huge strides forward, but that scissors thing looks tacky to be, but then again, what's 'ugly' to me, some artsy-heads think as 'bold' and 'artistic'....

Love, love, love the scissor tail fly-catcher. Someday when we are all dead Jacksonville may come around.

I thought my reference to Dallas with a theme song would lead most to think in terms of the TV shows dynamic intro. OKC has indeed trumped anything I've seen in Dallas.

By the way I'll be setting up a whole group of photos on what a dead FREEway looks like! OKC removed the aging I-40 through downtown and are planning to replace the old I-40 route with streetcar. The new I-40 alignment while still a FREEway, is in a flood plain protected by berms. The new road is perhaps the most artistic one I've seen in this country.

Avonjax, A striking bird of the central United States, the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher is nearly unmistakable with its long forked tail and salmon-pink belly. The state bird of Oklahoma, it is commonly found in only a handful of other states. Watching them pause in mid air and hover around fence lines is pretty amazing.

I visited OKC for the first time three weeks ago, and have a ton of pictures also.  It was truly impressive.  They clearly have the right formula and have the leadership in place to bring a truly world-class city into reality, something that it is well underway.

There are enough topics and neighborhoods to write 3-5 MJ cover stories.

OKC is VERY similiar in population and land area to JAX as well.  The city is a state capital of course, but the state buildings are completely separated from the urban core by a freeway, so the pedestrian impact is virtually non-existant from what I could tell.

That said, there is nothing OKC has done that Jax couldn't do.  If only it had visionary leadership.  I can't help but wonder what JAX would be like today if the BJP had shifted about .7 billion from highways to urban infrastructure/projects.  On the other hand, if that had been attempted, would it have passed?  A question to ponder.
