Metro Jacksonville

What ever happen to this 10 year old masterplan  for Jacksonville's northside? I wasn't even a teenager when this story developed so i know nothing about. Can someone fill me in?

NORTHEAST FLORIDA â€" A national technology company’s plans to bring a long-haul optical fiber route to Jacksonville could help shape Northeast Florida into a major telecommunications and cloud computing hub for the Southeast.

Allied Fiber LLC, a New York-based firm specializing in the leasing and sale of unused optical fiber for telecommunications traffic, so-called “dark fiber,” has identified Jacksonville as a potential location for a Network Access Point, a public facility used by multiple Internet service providers.

That story is well over a year old ... is this thing still going to happen?  Any new news?

There aren’t any comparable access points with access to Latin America in Northeast Florida. There was talk of bringing a $65 million Internet hub to Jacksonville’s Northside in 2001, but the plans fizzled.

That was the latest news I could find on it.  Surely if something moves forward we here will know about it.  :)

Isn't there a massive NAP of the Americas in Miami?

These are two different projects. One was from 2001, and it didn't come together. The other is a proposed project for later this year or early 2013.

I vaguely remember hearing something about this.  I think they were looking to build in Jacksonville but later on decided to build in Atlanta.  I don't think too many people in this city cared about this except for a few high level technologists. 

Why would anyone not care about this? The proposed center in 2001 was projected to create nearly 10,000 permanent jobs in the region. And generate over 14 mil. in property tax revenues.

The city would rather devote its resources to landing minimum wage jobs selling hot dogs at a sports stadium or building a parking facility for a dying retail venue.

Wasn't the Pecan Park Road property up for sale?

Projections?  We all know how those work.  Hey lets project the ridership 30 years in the future.  we engineers call that a wag, but get paid no were as much as those that make them
