Some really incredible buildings.  Kinda Scary.  seems like Jacksonville could end up like this one day.. If we don't demolish everything first. :(

Look at that woodwork in the Gary Public Schools Memorial Auditorium...

Looks just like what is left of the windows in Annie Lytle auditorium, arch tops included.

Nah. Jacksonville is far for this. We preserve some structures, and tear down the rest. I think Anne Lyte is the only structure in this city that can be compared to anything in this article. We just need to start preserving MORE and demolishing LESS and we will be fine. Its good to stay (knock on wood) that nothing dowtown has been demolished in a very long time. Thankfully.

Gary is in rough shape. I was there two weeks ago and took several pics. It will be the topic of a future article.

The Church in the pictures is just incredible.   A lot of interesting old buildings and no means to bring any of them back, it would appear.

When I posted previously ,what I meant was that we do not seem to have resources  to bring any of our historic structures back, even the smallest and least expensive to restore. Gary , Indiana. seems to be an example of the end-result.

I would love to think that this could never happen to Jacksonville.  Then I look around at numerous vacant and decaying buildings in just our downtown area. Springfield.Fragment remains of LaVilla , Brooklyn.  The further the burbs extend, the more the central part of Jacksonville seems to decline.   It was said nothing has been demolished downtown recently.  Nope. not in a year or so.

Does not seem all that far-fetched to think it could happen.  Annie Lytle is one example. The recent book about our landmarks depict very similar conditions in many of these structures and all with the same problem.  No money or purpose for them.. yet.

We can only hope that  a way is identified , and soon.  Time is running out for many of these places.

Maybe in a post-apocalyptic future, like the year 2525. Gary is definitely 'Hastily Made Tourism video' material.

Incredible pictures, and incredibly sad. Unfortunately, our country's once mighty midwest is littered with industrial ghost towns like Gary.
