Note to self, do not point any gun of any kind at a JSO officer after they have asked to put the gun down:
From ActionNews website, 6/24/2012
QuoteJACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating the ninth police involved shooting of 2012.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the shooting happened in front of the home at 140 E. 5th Street in Springfield at 2:15 a.m. Sunday.
According to JSO Chief Tom Hackney police were initially called to that address because they received 911 calls about a suicidal man with a knife.
Hackney says when officers arrived at the address they noticed a man who fit the description of the suicidal man reported in the 911 call. He says officers found the man sitting on the porch of the address armed with a handgun.
According to Hackney officers told the man to drop his weapon when the man stepped to the officers and raised the gun.
Hackney says one of the responding officers opened fire once, hitting the man in the chest.
The man was transported to U.F. & Shands Hospital Jacksonville in critical condition. Hackney says the man is currently in critical, but stable, condition.
Both the responding officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard JSO procedure after police involved shooting.
True dat!
How stupid do you have to be?
it is not wise to point a firearm at any law enforcement... lead poisoning is a bitch..
The man was apparently suicidal and was banking on "death by cop". Which is a fairly standard suicide tactic. We can jump all over him and be insensitive to the situation and just post the standard "Oh boy, was he duuuummmmb!" Or we could try and keep it classy and discuss the potential situation that brought this man to ending his life. Discuss what mental health help options may (or in the case of Jacksonville "may not) have been available to him.
Obviously we're going for the dumb route. Way to go guys.
I hope he survives, and I hope he gets the treatment he needs. It's sad that it takes pointing a gun at a cop to get that treatment.
Pretty Sad. I agree with you , Loki .

DO you actually know that or are you assuming it because the story says he was suicidal. I'm not arguing, I'm just curious.
If he was banking on 'death by cop,' then I change my original sentiment - he was smart to do it, I guess. I feel bad for the cop who shot him, though. And for his family and friends. And maybe even him, though I don't know why he was suicidal and it's not really my place to decide who should or shouldn't live.
Shouldn't we also have some concern for the officers who had to respond to this situation in the way that they were forced? The suicidal guy isn't the only victim.
I don't think anyone is saying the Cops are the bad guys. It is a sad situation . I feel for the police whose safety is at risk and I feel for the man because he felt he had no help and no way out , other than to take his life.
ON this one I cannot go the PC route in any way shape or form. IF I have any sympathy it is for the officer(s) who have to deal with the their psychological backlash of the Use of Force.
There are far too many resources available for people who WANT psychological assistance. Many are of little to no cost. If his person wanted help, it was/is available.
BUT I am not NOT going to feel sorry for an individual that pulled a weapon on law enforcement officers and ended up shot..

well he did phone in the call to police about "a friend" who was suicidal....when police got there, the guy was out on the porch with a gun...so yeah, I think he was aiming for death by cop....or a serious plea for help!
