Title: Jacksonvillis is 26th most drunken cities in the nation
Post by: gatorback on January 23, 2008, 11:01:17 PM
What a horrible rating. We have a record number of drunk driving....however, Devenver, CO is #1.  I think we need stricker laws and personal responsiblity.  How about taking your car away on your 1st. offense?

Whoo hoo!  Something to be proud of ::)  This actually doesn't surprise me a bit and would actually explain a lot about...at least about the lack of driving ability of people here.

How do you think we compare to cities with LRT and/or commuter rail, BRT, and a bus system.  Check the list twice.

Good question.  I only know some of the cities listed with alternative transportation, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that those cities with an active alternative transportation program ('active' being the objective word here) rank far lower in the percentage of drunkedness than Jax.  Assuming of course, that "drunk" is being defined by the drunk-driving accidents and drunk-driving related incidents.

Actually, part of the calucation is the number of patients with liver and various other alcohol related injuries, like if you were drunk and fell down the stairs to your apartment, etc.

Don't you hate how the numbers get manipulated like that?  I remember how that was done with the "smoking-related" deaths/injuries reports.  Insurance companies would report an accident as being "smoking-related" if a pack of cigarettes was found in the car. ::)

I was looking for some statistical information I saw in a cycling magazine not long ago, that showed the number of accidents in the Netherlands caused by drunken CYCLISTS.  One would expect that since bicycles outnumber cars and all the driving laws are written to be in favor of cyclists.  Just wanted to point out that you might be able to take the drunk out of the car, but you'll have a hard time getting him/her off the road.

Notice how the huge cities with college campuses rank higher?  WHY is miami so low?  Maybe the number of old folks?  What is it about Miami?  How large is UM?  Isn't that a medical school?  I suppose the serious students being pre-med are down there as compared to say Dever.  Bunch of ate ups in the mile city huh?

Miami is too Latin for drunk drinking in public... Far too much money to be made doing other things and nobody that got that magic green card is going to waste it laying in the gutter... Hic!

The other half that don't have the magic green card don't want to draw attention to themselves by blowing down the freeway in the wrong lanes.

Ever drink that Aguardiente (fire water) they sell in Colombia? Hell they give it to baby's with upset tummys. It doesn't cure the Adult belly ache-butterflies... but you can hear the little buggers scream out in pain all night long. The Colombians will waltz up to any stranger and hand off a glass or bottle of the stuff... they laugh like hell when the victim tries to breathe. These guys can drink without effect!

Just shows you that we are REALLY not all that far from the days of "Uncle Al's" business out in the woods behind the barn.

If there is another mode of transportation I always choose that over driving after having drinks.  But in a city that you are basically limited to driving a personal vehicle to go out, you can expect the number of drunk drivers to be high.

It's pretty sad that the city I currently live in was ranked an F, but if you lived long enough in Columbia, you'd start drinking alot, too. Usually, drinking is about the only popular activity you'll see at Univ. of South Carolina.

I bet $50.00 that Austin drops drastically down the list in 2008 with the Red Line starting service in the fall.  That will for sure cut the number  for Austin.  I know the drunk bus helps have personal experience watching fries come back up on a lovely co-ed. ha

Lack of things to do that don't involve drinking is probably the largest factor.

Second largest factor is probably enforcement, maybe just more drunks get caught in Jacksonville.

Plus I wonder if a person driving through Jacksonville without even intending to stop here gets a DUI if that still  reflected on the study. We really can't help it that people drink while heading to Daytona. I bet people in Waldo are also listed as the worst speeders in the nation.

Charleston Native? Is it really that bad in Columbia? I was talking about ColOmbia, the Nation... Land of cast iron digestion. Some of the long dead ones could be sold for medical parts, because a mere 100 years on a body in the Andes is nothing... these folks are preserved! That stuff they love is pure corn squeezin's and it's as clear as water!

QuoteI know the drunk bus helps have personal experience watching fries come back up on a lovely co-ed. ha

I remember a certain little Mexican gal that I worked and worked to get a bit closer too... finally the moment came when we went into Los Angeles at night, arm and arm. She was SO BEAUTIFUL, 102 pounds of pure Latin Lust, black eyes, high cheek bones, long black hair, native silver jewelry... She could stop traffic in her skin tight jeans. When we got home, she was pretty well tanked. I tried to put her to bed but got sort of pulled in with her. "Oh come on and keep me warm... etc..." So being the dumb gringo that I am I just got comfortable and snuggled up when she dumped 2 tacos, 3 coronas, a malta, and God know what else mixed with the little worm, all over me, and the bed... Funny how quick that can kill a mood! "borrachita me voy!"

Well, it's not bad here, but it does get rather boring. The "2 hours to the beach" claim that residents like to say frequently is not comforting, because when you're living here, the beach feels like 1000 miles away. Needless to say, I'm ready for a change.
