Denton acknowledged the city deserves “a reasonable amount of time†to respond to public records requests. But the lawsuit refers to several instances in the past three months where repeated delays and excuses were given from city officials to reporters seeking public documents that were not delivered.
The lawsuit references requests for documents pertaining to the new courthouse. It also specifically details how Mayor Alvin Brown’s spokesman David DeCamp was unresponsive to journalist’s requests and other instances.
“The city’s continuing refusal to allow access to the requested public record is a refusal to perform an official ministerial duty,†the complaint said.
“I’ll look at it,†Laquidara said. “The first thing we’ll do is check the facts. If there’s a public document that’s owed, we’ll get it to that person.â€
A phone call placed to Brown’s Chief of Staff Chris Hand seeking comment on the lawsuit was unsuccessful in contacting him Wednesday, though a voice message was left asking for a return call. A voice mail seeking comment was left on DeCamp’s phone as well.
Denton said the Times-Union is not seeking any punitive damages from City Hall, just compliance with the law. However, if the newspaper is successful in getting an emergency court hearing that rules in its favor, city government could be directed to pay for the news agency’s attorney fees.
Yet another mark on the administration, are they going to hire some people who have a clue as to how to work with the public? How many more marks and possible dollars wasted must we endure???? Is anyone driving the ship, or are we too busy making public appearances with Mickey Mouse?

Moran!!!! Alvin Brown is a coward. He won't even stand strong for equality and back expanding the Human Rights Ordinance, not to mention return calls or letters to his office. Though I did see him strutting around the Players Golf Tournament fishing for adoration. Everyone was ignoring him--it was kind of funny. He is quickly losing the independents and moderates who put him in office. Moran, please get back in the race.

that would be Chris Hand...although I've heard rumors of some past administration staff (that know the deal) being brought in soon.
Under Peyton, sunshine requests were taken seriously. Under this administration, it seems not. We have two in that they were very slow to acknowledge and once sent to the City Council people, they have been ignored. We have not had the time to pursue this legally as of yet. And, in my opinion, one should not have to call Ms. Laquidara to get the law followed. This is not a good sign for this mayor nor his administration.

Brown needs a staff shakeup and in a hurry. Unfortunately, the disorganization appears to be top down. Brown wants to continue campaigning all over town with his stump speech turned drinking game while Chris and Karen drink from the firehose lacking anyone underneath with real operational knowledge.
It should also be said that when you summarily dismiss decades of government experience, some outstanding public servants, and replace them with political favors, you are going to have real problems.
In the end though, Brown will have to admit he needs help and then accept it. I don't see that happening.

I remember hearing people in the campaign grumbling when Chris Hand was appointed Chief of Staff - apparently people skills are not high on Chris' talent list.
Mayor Brown is currently making a tour of the CPACs - be at Southeast Monday the 25th. I am wondering if he thinks this is a substitute for the quarterly meetings each of his predecessors had with the CPAC chairs?
What I find the most interesting about this Administration is their political naivety. Their policies are vacuous or nonexistent however I am not most surprised by that, I expected it. I am surprised they continue to alienate themselves from those responsible for Brown's election: Republican voters in the urban core who made the decision NOT to support the devil they knew, Mike Hogan AND mobilized African-American voters. Rather, Brown is trying to conduct as a hard fiscal Conservative in an attempt to appeal to an electorate that will never vote for him. Could be he believes himself popular and listens to bunk such as the following T-U excerpt from the UNF poll conducted in April.
746 registered Duval County voters were polled from March 27-April 3, well prior to Tuesday's news that Rick Santorum is dropping his presidential bid.
"What it is showing is that both parties need to get their voters out," said Matt Corrigan, head of UNF's political science department.
Brown's approval rating is at 75 percent, up from 61 percent in March. Corrigan said Brown is attracting voters from both major parties.
"I think of the historic nature of his election attracts Democrats, and his budget cutting attracts Republicans," he said.
Corrigan is professionally blessed in that for some reason the T-U continues to reference him as a local elections expert despite the fact his opinions are rarely if ever supported by the statistics generated by his own polls. Yet, he enjoys the attention he receives engaging in pure political speculation.
I'll offer some reasons why Brown's poll number were high in this poll and why I suspect they are much lower, especially now. First, registered voters were polled and not those identifying themselves as actual voters. In the odd year election cycle of 2011, how many registered voters turned out as a percentage of the vote? It was LOW. An apathetic electorate is not one on which you trust your approval ratings nor should a political scientist being making blanket statements on such a sample.
Secondly, the media love affair with Brown is ending and the inept Brown team has no answer for it. The T-U is finally conducting some actual journalism as a result of being denied public records requests. Further, I think even the T-U is sick of listening to the same "best and brightest", "public-private partnerships", "downtown grocery store" routine they have been getting for 18 months. (that's 3 drinks for anyone counting) For the record on this one, I'm disappointed with The Folio. They have been slow to cast off their partisan shackles, recognize Brown for what he is, and start digging.
Lastly, and I say this bluntly but not with disrespect, someone close to Brown needs to shut Brown up. He continues to go around town on the stump and, when he does answer questions, makes outlandish promises he has no ability or intent to keep. I understand why he doesn't want to go off stump: He can't help himself when he goes off script (a common affliction of elected officials. If afflicted, one can be treated with hard work). However someone needs to become Brown's permanent spokesperson and work with Brown to expand yet control his messaging.
As a democrat and a progressive, I am disappointed with Brown's politics and policies. He needs to open himself up to suggestions and compliment his openness with doers who know local government.
